    Winchester 70's - Pre 64

True that. As pretty as a low profile, 1 inch polished blued steel tube scope may look, even cheap modern optics are better. Etched reticles, better glass and coatings, lighter weight. That old Weaver K4 is still good to go in decent light. Larry

    .22 Rimfire Revolver Musings

Just to update this old thread - My buddy has since sent the GP-100 back to Ruger. They replaced the cylinder / ratchet assembly, as well as a few other tweaks. He now reports very good accuracy, as well as reliability and a much smoother DA trigger pull. S/A pull is only "OK". Good to see...

    Winchester 70's - Pre 64

OP - Couple of nice rifles there. You asked about typical 1950's scope set ups for the pre-64 model 70. Pictured is mine, an early Featherweight in .308 Win. The scope is a Weaver 4x in "swing away" mounts that allow the quick use of the iron sights if needed. Off the top of my head, I...

    First year pre 29

RT44nut - that is one fine looking pre-29. I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty to run one of your photos thru some adjustment to better highlight the gun. Larry

    Aimpoints or Red Dots

First, you have to decide if you want an open, or closed (tube) type sight. Open emitter red dots are popular, with Holosun getting good reviews. I can personally recommend Vortex and Burris as well. I have several of this type, mostly on range guns. Frankly though, I like closed emitter...

    44 magnum hunter

When it comes to longer ranges, dot size matters, as does your basic eyesight. I have pretty bad astigmatism in my dominant eye, and so even small 2moa dots look large and star patterned at 100 yards. Useable, but not sharp and precise. I can usually keep 6 on a paper dinner plate at 100...

    44 magnum hunter

Nice shooting with a nice gun. I have one as well, and it is a shooter. Changed the optic out with a Sig Romeo red dot. Funny thing is, I bought it as a deer gun, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, but have never taken a deer with it. I always seem to grab one of my other revolvers when actually...

THE BEST 22LR RIFLE I HAVE EVER SHOT IN MY LIFE!

Funny you mention the Chinese copy of the BRNO / CZ bolt action design. I picked one up years ago, maybe 1984, for something like $65 brand new. Mounted a cheap scope, and found out it had an excellent trigger, and was almost as accurate as my real CZ's. I eventually gifted it to the son of a...

    Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman

Nice find. 4" N frames have always been a sweet spot. Pictured is my 1963 4" Mod. 28. Larry

    29-3 w/ 8 3/8 barrel

Congrats on a real clean -3. I have one as well, but not nearly as clean. Very accurate & well made. For storage in a soft case, I would look hard at "Bore Stores", or other similar products that are designed to breath, not hold moisture, and are treated with silicone to protect against rust...

4" 686-4 with Nice Thai Grips

586-ND. Swapped the factory targets for good old Pachmayers. Ugly, yes, but probably about the best choice for a cop's working gun. Years of duty carry, and PPC competition, these stocks have earned as much respect as any fancy walnut pair. Fancy wood doesn't do so good when your hands are...

    Disposing of unusable ammo

Years ago, I had a case of LEO commercial .9mm reloads. Poor QC, ammo from this lot # had already blown case heads in several pistols belonging to guys who used this stuff. I lived in CT at the time, and decided to just take the case of ammo out deep water salt water fishing next time I went...

A Lucky Find .22 Grail Gun

CH4 - Nice rifles. That Italian Weatherby is a looker. I had one of the Japanese versions years ago. Beautiful rifle, and accurate, but I eventually sold it as you couldn't hunt with a .22 semi in PA back then....:( Larry
