I have a High Standard .22 pistol with "Super Matic" stamped on the left side. On the right side it is stamped, "Model 107 Military" along with the serial number.
A friend also has a HIgh Standard that isn't a Super Matic, (I forget which model) but is stamped, "Military" on the right side.

When did S&W move caliber markings from one side of the barrel to the other? My older revolvers have the caliber stamp on the left side. My Victory model are marked on the right side so the change must have been before the 40's.
I guess I could also ask when S&W changed the cylinder rotation...

I am under the impression that the .38 S&W round takes a back seat to a .38 special. If that is the case why were they produced as late as they were? I own a 32-1 in a 2" and my model 36 does all the 32-1 does and more.
