    Info needed on 1917

From everyone's responses, It does seem that this may have been a frame and barrel that was part done during WWI and put away somewhere, maybe put in the 'wrong place' in the factory. Later it is found and they think 'waste not, want not' and use it to make another gun. But by that time, the...

OK. Removed sideplate. Assembly number does match. Attached are 3 pics. First shows assembly number. Second shows the whole sideplate. Third is a picture of the action (or is the correct term lockwork?) in case that helps you guys narrow in on the date. No other parts found riding in the...

Oh, it shoots really well! I've only put maybe 30 rounds through it so far as I really want to put together some lighter loads than the ones I made for my 1911's and Glocks. No need to run a slide. The ones I have already are not hot by any means, but then they are not light either.

Well, Because this one seems to be a little unusual, due to the combination of early and later features, and also because of the incredible generosity from the people on this forum with their time and knowledge, I think it is only fair that I 'drop the benjamin' and put in the request for a...

Would the question/info I posted about it evidently having some form of hammer safety (even with no S prefix on the serial number) point towards the later era? I wasn't sure if the prefix just meant it had a newer type of hammer safety than before, or if prior to that, there were no hammer...

Thanks. I was just going to ask that very question!

One other piece of info in form of a question. I hear about hammer safeties and the S prefix. Is it just a different newer version of safety that came with the S prefix? This definitely has some form of safety. The hammer does go forward further with the trigger pressed than not. I also tested...

So, the assembly numbers would be added at the time of. er, assembly? That's why those match. Yoke s/n and extractor star underside s/n match the barrel, cylinder and frame too.

One more pic. This is the left side plate. I cannot make out anything like a crest, but then I am not familiar with what it looks like.

Amazing information guys! To answer some of the questions. Yes, it has Smith and Wesson on the right side of the barrel. No, i only see the serial number on the rear of the cylinder I've attached some more pics. First is a better pic of the rear sight. Definitely looks like the second picture...

Can I just say it makes me sad...

I own a few guns. Lets just say, more than 10... :) I like them. I buy all kinds, just because. Some are cheap. Some are not. But, I guess I have a fair amount tied up in them. If I died, I could not expect my son to keep all (uh, I think it was 'ten' ), of them? If I left him a house, would I...

Wow! What an eye! I never even saw that. I'm going to have to dig it out now and look for other markings more closely.

I cannot see a trace of a crest or anything like that. Just some tiny pits if I really zoom in that contribute to my reblue theory. Really good idea though. Never even thought of that and it still might be valid. Another thing that made me think of the reblue (other than the odd coloring) was...

    Info needed on 1917

I picked up a 1917 the other day. Knew nothing about it, just saw it in the pawn shop and liked it. Serial number is 181378. Read through a few posts using the search engine and still a little confused about what it actually is or roughly when it was made. It has no 'US Property' markings, so...
