Thank you all, it makes clear sense to me now. I did make a mistake; it has the target hammer but not the target trigger. And it has a later pair (no diamond) of target grips.

Thanks for all your help. The serial number is K172XXX, which puts it at 1952. The side plate screws are a but buggered, so a previous owner probably upgraded it with the target hammer.

I was looking at a K38 today, 5-screw, 3T, but it looked a bit odd. The finish was rather flat for an S&W. I thought maybe it had been refinished, but the markings were completely sharp. Any thoughts?

Interesting; they make a cover to keep dirt out of the gun, but cut large holes in the mags to let dirt in.

Yes, I think we are talking about the same one from GB. I hesitated bidding because of the sight, but it certainly didn’t look like it had been changed per se, and it was so darned pretty that I went for it. I guess a factory letter would help settle the matter, though not sure I want to spend...

How common (rather, how rare) are the dust covers for the 39? Was it an ordered option, or did a certain number of the early guns just come with them?

I have a Pre-27, nickel-plated, in the S140,xxx serial range, and it has the ramp front sight with red insert. I thought they didn’t start using that sight until much later. Was it a custom-order option earlier?

What is the story on the dust covers? Did specific 39’s come with them?
