American Rifleman Magazine, June 2015, AR as home defense weapon

I do not understand why people do not have a home defense battery? I have a revolver (4: Mod 19 with 158gr HPT) for each side of the bed, an AR-15 as well for each side of the Bed. The wife and I know to defend with the rifle from a prepared position if we are given time, if not grab the...

What defense load for 4 inch model 28

For my circumstances, living more in the country and needing something for occasional pig or two, I like the 158 gr Jacketed Softnose Win. or Remington. I need penetration more than rapid expansion. Truth be known, any full power .357 mag is a good self defense load. So pick one you shoot well...

    25-5 Boolit mold

I bought this mold from Miha at castboolits for my 25-5, have not had a chance to load with it yet but will soon. It should be just about perfect for the 25-5. It is a clone of the RCBS 270gr SAA bullet. The mold is a brass cramer style by Miha. He made extra and if you want one now is the time...

    44 Mag Defensive loads

If you want 1000 fps and expansion in your revolver, cast a SWC hpt out of 1/20 tin-lead mix. This bullet will expand and penetrate. Rotometal sells this and other mixes. For defensive ammo I would buy the mix to ensure the bullet is malleable and will expand not shatter. The antomony in wheel...

    "K" Frame Power?

2400 powder is the way to go in my humble opinion! No flame cutting and long revolver life. If you want the small increase in performance from ball powders, get a carbine.

    Powder choice for 30-06

Mdaly hit it on the head, slow powders 4350 and 4831 are great choices and offer max speed out of a bolt gun. Semi autos require 4895 or 4064 for the proper pressure curve to safely operate the gas system. Classic m1 garand load is 49grs IMR-4895 @ 150 gr spitzer bullet. Classic m1 garand...

    cast lead for defense

Repo men are shot on a fairly regular basis in Texas while trying to take possesion of the car at night. No charges are filed. Dont take things at night in Texas or you can and will be shot.

    cast lead for defense

Hollow point SWC or roundnose is old techology that is well understood. Correct hollow point with the correct lead mix will expand at the stated velocity. Penetration becomes an issue, which is why I pointed out some heavier bullets. Lead tin mix with no antimony will expand and hold together...

    Casting time

Lead fumes are not a risk unless you get your snout within an inch or less of the molten lead. Fumes from melting battery plates is a real problem but regular lead is a non issue. Gloves and hand washing is best.

.38 special and .357 magnum starter kit

There is another way to count the cost of reloading. How many calibers do you or will you load for? Once you have the basic kit, now you can load for your 30-30 or 30-06 or .223 etc. 41-44-45 Colt etc. Once the kit is in the house it just takes an outlay for the dies and components. Think of...

    cast lead for defense

Texas Tom, I see nothing wrong with using your reloads as self defense ammo. I will now offer some free advice on how and what to use. I would get a SWC mold and some good lube that will not kill you powder. Then I would order some lead tin mix from Roto metals to make my bullets from. I think...

    Help with 25-5

My 25-5 has some big cylinder throats and I solved this by sizing to 454 as mentioned above. My most accurate bullet is a classic 454424 Keith SWC 255gr cast out of range scrap with 2.5% tin added. Classic 50/50 lube and 8.5grs unique. My mold was from a group buy over at castboolits, NOE has...

    45 Colt 255gr SWC

I picked up a 5 cavity 255gr Keith SWC mold from NOE last year. Cast using range lead and 2.5% tin. Sized to .454 and lubed with 50/50 bees wax/Alox. Starline cases, CCI LP primers, Unique @ 8.5 grs. Shot in my S&W 25-5. It was the most accurate load I have ever shot out of this revolver! I...

How, when do you inspect your brass before reloading?

I hand tool prime with an RCBS tool. This is when I detail inspect my brass. I look for obvious problems at all stages of the reloading process.
