What parts to buy for a 629-5 future rebuild?

This is my 629-5 44 mag. It shoots very tight groups. I have shot it close to 27,000 times since buying it in 1999. If you look in the pictures you can see that there is some galling/peening on each edge of the cylinder notches. I load all of my ammunition and have recently switched to 23.5...

What do your deerstands look like?

Looks like somebody might have 'em a secret bunker on the plains. If you look, you can see what appears to be a hatch toward the lower left of the picture.:) That does look nice though. I can see myself riding out there like Gus did when he went after Lori in Lonesome Dove. I've wanted to...

    9mm load book discrepancy.

Thanks for the response guys. I think I'll start with 6 gr. and work up from there if I need to. I just wonder why 6 gr. is MAX from Sierra and 2/10 gr. lower than MIN. from Speer using the same bullet. If I didn't have both manuals I'd never know, but it seems to me that the load data...

    9mm load book discrepancy.

I am trying to work up a load of 9mm and can't seem to find any consistant load data. I am using 115 gr. Berry's Plated Round Nose bullets and have a keg of PowerPistol powder. There aren't any published data with this particular combination. I know about using low to mid range jacketed...

What do your deerstands look like?

Thanks for all the compliments everyone. To answer your question, yes I have spent many nights there. It's very peaceful and allows me to get away from everything. There's no cell signal there and no electricity. I have a kerosene heater in the corner that vents outside and there are two...

How Often Do You Change Tumbler Media?

I'm the one who started the other thread on where to get the cheapest media. I asked because I have been cleaning all of the brass I have on hand for the past couple of weeks and I have gone thru about 12 pounds of it. I do like a bright shiny brass so I also use Frankfort Arsenal Brass Polish...

    should i sell...?

I had a Marlin 336 30-30 and I did sell it. I sold it to help pay for a Henry Big Boy .44 mag. I really like the Big Boy, it's accurate and a lot of fun to shoot. That doesn't change the fact that I could kick myself for selling the 30-30. The Big Boy is just too pretty to take out in the...

What do your deerstands look like?

Click the Picture for a larger view. This is the deerstand that my Dad and I built several years ago. It's 8'x8' on the inside with a 2' walkway all around. It's 16' from the ground to the floor. It sits at the edge of a spring fed creek that borders a 20 acre alfalfa field. We've seen...

    Cheapest source of tumbling media.

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but I'm sure most of you are like me and are always looking for a way to save money. Several years ago I got a couple of parakeets for my nephew. When I was in the pet store I noticed they had ground walnut hulls that you put in the bottom of bird...

    cylinder gap of 0.011?

All of the revolvers I own are S&W. I don't like any of their semi-automatics. I go with Colt and Springfield Armory for those. The 629-5 revolver I spoke of earlier was the first revolver I purchased instead of being inherited from family members. Am I understanding correctly that Dan...

    cylinder gap of 0.011?

This is a great point. My 629-5 has a cylinder gap of .009 on the left side and .010 on the right and I'm able to shoot consistent 3" groups at 100 yds with handloads. There doesn't appear to be any cone erosion and it doesn't spit lead. (I have used the cardboard setup somebody else...

What does a Heavy Crimp Look Like?

This is exactly the kind of picture I was looking for and going by the picture, I do indeed need to crimp more than I have been. I've been using IMR-4227 and it doesn't require a heavy crimp like H110 - at least not in my experience. Thank you for taking the time to post the picture.

What does a Heavy Crimp Look Like?

Thanks for the link. That guy did a great job presenting the information. He's using a 329PD and having blast shield erosion problems using 23.5 grs. of H110/296 and 240 gr. XTP. Since I'm using a stainless steel 629-5 I don't think I'll have any problems.

What does a Heavy Crimp Look Like?

I have recently started using H110 with a 240gr. XTP. I have read that you should use a heavy crimp, especially with H110. I've always crimped just enough to prevent the bullet from unseating itself under recoil, but I've always used IMR-4227. So, does anyone have any close-up pictures of...
