There wasn't anything underneath the tape. I asked CDI what it was and they replied that it was reflective tape. Their thought was that it was placed there by a LE or security group to help aid in the identification of one of their own. But who knows, really.

If you're talking about something other than the recoil spring, I'd say it depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Within a few hours owning my first 3rd gen, I had it fully disassembled (minus the extractor, front sight and barrel bushing) for a deep cleaning. Those videos on YouTube...

Thanks. I thought I had a fool-proof way of aligning the holes. I marked them from the inside using a toothpick and some of my wife's hot pink fingernail polish. Then used the fine tip on my soldering gun to burn a pilot hole through the delrin. The hole on the right side was perfect, but...
