    MOP handled 44 special

As requested I have added a picture of the cylinder, taken from the rear. BTW, The patina (aka "rust") adds character, and I have been advised to not take actions to remove it. Is there a way to reduce it that is non destructive? And of course should I even try? If not that's OK because it in no...

    MOP handled 44 special

I looked on the side of the barrel and it is mostly illegible. It starts with 44, becomes unreadable and ends with CTG. The bullets we have been using in it are 44 Special.

    MOP handled 44 special

I would like to know more about this old gun. I believe the serial number is 11604. This old gun was inherited from my grandfather. It is a 5 screw, hand ejector with no model number though the yoke has matching assembly numbers 9996. I inherited it from my grandfather, given to me by my dad. It...

I don't see a lock on the new 640 with night sights.

Hi folks. I happened to look at this site Smith & Wesson 342PD Titanium Centennial .38 Special +P and I believe I saw the lock referred to, and on my Stainless 640-1 there is no lock. I also saw reference to the Glaser ammo, which would seem to be a good round for self defense. Thoughts anyone?

I don't see a lock on the new 640 with night sights.

I recently bought a used 640 at a gun show. I am curious as to what this lock is that is referred to in this thread. If it is a safety "lock", the fact that it is 12+/- lbs of pull is the only safety feature as it is a hammerless double action. So what is the lock referred to in this thread please?

    Old 44

Thank your for your reply. Tool is that it has been used and not abuse...though perhaps a little neglected. As for Serial number, I'd been told that the number next to the cylinder on the yoke, not the one on the butt was the serial number, which is why I gave it as the number. Thanks for the...

    Old 44

Hi Folks. New to the forum. I actually already did a post, but as a reply, not realizing that it was a reply and not a new post, until done. Pictures are of an old 44 special that I got from dad, that he got from his dad. I want the date of manufacture, but don't want to go to S&W. I am told by...

    S&W date of manufacture

Old 44 Hi folks. I have an old family 44 special, and I want to find out the date of manufacture, without going to S&W. I have included a picture including of what I understand to be the serial number. The serial number reads either @655 or 9655. I have been told by other gun users that from...
