Most hardware stores sell brass hinge pins. They fit nicely in a .357 barrel, are about 4" long, sturdy and come 2 to a pack. Their larger, flattened head is great for hitting with a hammer.

I don't know that anyone on this forum can do anything but guess. Mine is that it was the engraver. Even with the turn line, it's a beautiful revolver.

Here's another opinion. The side plate treatment is exactly like the rest of the revolver...slightly rounded/softened. It's not like they come from the factory but I don't think that's what they were going for. Personally, I like it.

I contacted these folks about an OWB holster for my S&W 3" model 65. They replied that they have one for up to 4" barrels so there would be some extra length. They also have one for a 2.75" barrel with the end open so a 3" will be exposed and some customers weren't happy with the "fit". I know...
