I get a lot of carbon on the exterior of my barrel as well. It is tenacious stuff that doesn't wipe off with CLP or Iosso brightening paste (whatever it's called - similar to Flitz). I have to scrape the deposits off the barrel. The slide and frame get some schmutz as well, but it comes off...

I have a PC 4.25" ported core and a Vortex Viper red dot. Mine co-witnesses with the irons perfectly. My only beef is that the locking screws to secure your windage and elevation adjustment is blocked by the rear sight. It can be worked around I suppose, but it IS a pain in the keyster.
