    SW top break model?

I have a hammerless top break S&W revolver in .38 SW, serial number 38979. The latch to open the revolver is a button on the top center of the frame behind the top strap. Finish is blued. Any idea on the production date and model number? thanks!

6.5" PRE WAR 38/44 HEAVY DUTY

I picked this one up in Glendale CA; it was shipped to a store in Los Angeles in either '35 or '36 and was one of a group of 10. Paid $300 for it and sold it recently for $550.

    Guns of the Fed's 1920-1950

According to a book I read recently about the attack on Blair House in 1950 in an effort to assassinate Harry Truman, the Secret Service presidental security detail carried Colt Detective Special revolvers with a Thompson locked in a cabinet in the basement of the residence. The White House...

How do you identify a South African Victory Model?

SA's WW2 theaters of operation were predominantly North Africa and Italy as you mentioned. Some Afrikaners were sympathetic to Germany pre WW2 but then so were some in the UK and the USA. After the war started the nation came together behind the war effort. There was a lot more pro German...

How do you identify a South African Victory Model?

As stated the official SA ordnance mark is a U (for Union of South Africa) enclosing a broad arrow. For what it is worth, when I was in South Africa in 1985 I saw police officers carrying what appeared to be SW Victory models with laynard loops in full flap leather holsters. I could only see...

factory letter on pre war .38/44

Front sight modification rear sight modification The trigger is a grooved 'target trigger' no doubt of recent vintage. The hammer appears to match the revolver. Too bad the piece was altered.

factory letter on pre war .38/44

I just looked at the FAQ section and learned that the HD is the fixed sight version which is what I have. Phew, no longer glaringly ignorant!

Here is a picture of the revolver the day I got it. I have replaced the grips with some service type grips since then.

factory letter on pre war .38/44

I paid my $35 for a factory letter on a pre-war .38/44 that I picked up at the Glendale CA gunshow last year for $300. It is a 6.5" that was modified with an undercut front sight and the rear strap was notched and a larger fixed blade installed. Nothing extraordinary in the letter, it...

How much for a "Shooting Grade" Heavy Duty?

I paid about $300 for this early '30s HD about 6 months ago. Someone modified the sights and stuck a target trigger and magna grips on it but for all that it is a sweet shooter. Has an excellent bore and chambers.
