Winchester 38 Spl +P “FBI Load” Chronographed in S&W Heavy Duty 5 in

Interesting how a simple "soup can" lead bullet is making a comeback in defensive revolver ammunition. Underwood also has a "full power" standard pressure coated hard cast wadcutter in their current 38Spl. line. Note I said "comeback." The January 1941 Winchester Ammunition Jobber's Price...

    Revolvers S&W "Should" have made??

Circa 1964: If the 41 Magnum had been introduced in a model based on a Highway Patrolman (mdl 28) format. Such a "working man's" big bore magnum may have given a jump start to the then nascent handgun hunting trend. Indeed the .41 Magnum n-frame guns had sufficient mass in the cylinder to be...

    Buckshot Penetration Question?

My favorite buckshot hunting load: 12 Ga, 3" Mag. - 3 - .600" Hard Lead Alloy Buckshot @ 1100 fps. No penetration questions.

    Buckshot Penetration Question?

Back to lead ball ballistics: Assuming an actual nominal .33" and 54 grain weight under the 00B moniker. Full power 2.75" 12 gauge, 00B nine pellet rounds are rated at 1325 fps, 3" 00B 15 pellet rounds are rated at 1250 fps. (Note: All industry shotshell velocity readings are taken 3 feet...

    Buckshot Penetration Question?

Just to clarify: If you are using domestic factory ammunition, the actual pellet diameter and weight of the pellets of whatever size designation will be less than industry nominal. Most 00B currently loaded will run .315" to .319" and less than 48 grains. Yes, a few brands have pellets running...

As you say, the operative word is "heavy."

    Shotgun Resurgence?

Since 20 gauge buckshot has been mentioned: Frankly all readily available 20 gauge buckshot cartridges are sorely in need of technical performance upgrades. Indeed all 20 bore buck loads, with the exception of having coarse buffer added, are simply gas seal and filler wad designs. No shot...

    Shotgun Resurgence?

It seems something is missing in this discussion. Let's see: "Buckshot is simply lead shot formed to larger diameters. Sizes range in ascending order from size B to Tri-Ball." Lead Shot Applications - Nuclead Translation: Lead buckshot pellets run from .17" to .60" in diameter. I recall...

    Light weight 3 inch K-Frame 38SPL+P

I suspect that many who view the S&W 642 as their "always gun", would also find a double action only "airweight" 3" K-frame with a flush fit hammer to be an excellent, dare I say comfortable, companion piece. I believe there are many who would appreciate just how easy such a light, snag free...

    Shotgun Resurgence?

Point: Virtually all domestic buckshot cartridges are loaded with sub diameter pellets. To the point some marketed as "00B" factory loads contain pellets as small as .305". Indeed, most factory loaded buckshot pellets are formed from soft lead to the point most emerge from the muzzle...

    Light weight 3 inch K-Frame 38SPL+P

I am aware of the old Mdl 12, and the high end revolvers made of ultra-light unobtainiam. The former quite fragile by todays standards and the latter limited and high dollar. That said, I believe S&W is missing a link in the CCW revolver market for a modern... ... basic 3 inch barrel...

    Light weight 3 inch K-Frame 38SPL+P

I wish S&W would make a basic 3 inch barrel aluminum frame, fixed sight K-Frame 38SPL+P revolver. I believe such a "Pro-Model" revolver with a flush to the frame spurless DAO hammer would appeal to a lot of revolver lovers - without breaking the bank. I suspect the empty weight would come in...

    Shotgun Resurgence?

Unfortunatly, this Flite Control load of fifteen .285", 33 grain pellets was discontinued approximately 2 years ago. According to current SAAMI voluntary industry standards, .285" lead buckshot pellets could be accurately described as American, (previously Eastern), #2B, or #1B.
