What hoppes solvent should I use?

Years ago Hoppes #9 contained benzine, bad stuff. My 10 year old hands were occasionally soaked in it. I believe that it is eliminated in most products now.

    Craig Spegel grips on M34-1

I find it amazing that some people have the skill and the patience to turn out works of art like that. What a beautiful set of grips.

    Collection Strategy

Love this thread, not much interest in 1950/60 vintage model 34's and 36's. Less demand keeps the selection high and the prices low for those of us that really dig the revolvers that we grew up with. That is, if you consider asking prices for decent examples in the $500 to $700 range.

    A + comment regarding the S&W store

A few days ago I ordered a new set of grips (stocks) from the on-line S&W store for a model 10-11 (California Department of Corrections) revolver that came with Uncle Mikes grips. The grips were fairly priced, promptly sent, and fit like a glove. They improve the appearance of this revolver...

Ok, my rookie face is showing.....

Long guns mostly with just a smattering of WW2 pistols but a whole lot of WW2 era rifles. Had over 400 at one time until storage became a problem. Sold most and concentrated on American made .22's from around 1920 thru 1960. It was a S&W model 34 rimfire that brought me to Smith & Wesson...

Ok, my rookie face is showing.....

Thanks to all. Yes, I was alittle shocked to see a different number on the cylinder assembly, but when I popped off the grips and saw the same number there I thought "assembly number." But before I called the seller and chewed him out for not mentioning it in his ad I thought I would check...

Ok, my rookie face is showing.....

I'm new to S&W revolvers and I just received a very nice three screw model 36 in .38 S&W Special as new with box and papers. I checked the serial number (677XXX) against the frame and the cylinder assembly numbers (055XX) and they do not match, however the grips match the serial number stamped...

    Some I-frame ?'s

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and informative responses. Yes, it's marked "34" (serial # 537XX) and according to S&W falls in the 58/59 year of manufacture range. The blue is near perfect with just a hint of the usual cylinder "drag line" detracting. In fact the blue is so vivid when...

    Some I-frame ?'s

So that's the reason that I paid an overpriced $650.00 for this rather average example. :) Serial # is 4700 Might not belong in this discussion, but my 1958/59 model 34 and the reason for my S&W affliction: and...my "on the way" early '60's vintage model 36 Chiefs special. Kinda...

    Some I-frame ?'s

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread, I have been pouring and lusting over it for the past hour. I am a long time collector, some 64 years now after a friend of my fathers in 1947 gave me his collection of two shotguns (Winchester 16 gage & Stevens 12 gage double barrel) three...

    please help a newbie

Wipe it down with a bit of quality gun oil on a soft rag. Anything beyond that will reduce value and collectablity. After that wear white gloves when handling.

    What's a 34 no dash .22 worth?

I bought this one last week, arrived yesterday. Looks like it just walked out of the factory, not a mark on it except for a faint drag-line on the cylinder. 34 "no dash" serial number in the 53XXX range, no box or papers, $499.00. Photos don't do it justice....
