Understanding "slugging" your gun using Cerrosafe... and more!

Yep, as I said previously "Actually, I would say that a pushed through (swaged) slug as you rightly recommend, is even more accurate than using Cerrosafe..." But each method has its own benefits. Swaging a soft slug down through a bore will give you the dimension of its tightest dimension. It...

Understanding "slugging" your gun using Cerrosafe... and more!

Yes, great idea, fast and good enough to check the cylinder openings, if you are gentle with their application. Doesn’t give you an exact on the barrel bore though. When you say push them through, I presume you don’t mean down and through the barrel?

Understanding "slugging" your gun using Cerrosafe... and more!

I agree, but my post was not just about using Cerrosafe for the measurement, but just to give a heads up to others who may be thinking of trying it for whatever reason. Also, just as an interesting (hopefully) read of what I found when giving my guns a once over. Actually, I would say that a...

Understanding "slugging" your gun using Cerrosafe... and more!

I have only recently tried some Cerrosafe (low temp casting alloy) which I got from Brownells. I will say more on this later. I recently acquired two no dash S&W 586 revolvers and a new Ruger SRH .44, and I cant tell you how happy that made me. Also I am setting up to start casting for these...

    Barrel Cylinder gap problem?

… but surely that would just be shifting the problem? It would be increasing the headspace by the thickness of the shim, and if we are talking about taking the C/B down to a 4thou c/b gap (from 12thou), then that would be adding 8thou to the headspace by shifting the cylinder forward. Also the...

    Barrel Cylinder gap problem?

I am thinking I may make a squared off plug to slip into the barrel, and then I can accurately assess the run out, that is I will know if the barrel is on the cant, or if it truly is the face cut. If it is the face cut, I can use a through barrel chamfering tool, and wont need to disassemble the...

    Barrel Cylinder gap problem?

Sending it back to S&W is too complicated and much too expensive (the red tape and import/export fees etc). I have my own home machine shop, and am capable enough to undertake the necessary work myself. Obviously any such work always carries some risks, and I would like to leave the gun in one...

    Barrel Cylinder gap problem?

I have just checked the cylinder/barrel gap on a recently acquired 586. I find that one one side it is approx 6thou, which is within the norm according to Jerry Kuhnhausens book. Unfortunately, the other side is around double that gap at about 12thou. I have checked the yolk and it is dead...

USPS does anyone here work for them?

"slow boat to NZ.... lol, love that one":D also "limboland"... thats a great word, have to remember that :D ... but you are right of course, it makes sense. I feel a bit daft for panicking, but then I had a fair amount of time and money invested in this. Anyway, as soon as I hit send on this...

USPS does anyone here work for them?

Wow... Why is that? But, even if it does take longer (with firearms), I just wonder how my parcel could have disappeared for so long, apparently not in the US or in NZ... According to the relevant authorities anyway. Must have been somewhere? LOL

USPS does anyone here work for them?

Great news.... The package has arrived. It was scanned into our Customs today, and I have immediately paid the duty and forwarded the appropriate import documents, and it should (hopefully) arrive to a post office locally within the next day or so. Opamailman, I really appreciate your reply...

USPS does anyone here work for them?

Hi SJ The package was sent Priority Mail Express, and I was told that it left the US on the 29th of May. I have a lot of stuff sent over from the US (Amazon goods etc) and packages normally only take one or two days to get here. On the odd occasion where goods have exceeded the free duty...

    How I miss my 586.......

Sorry to bump this post up again, but talk about bad luck, well ...I am at my wits end, as I have had two handguns shipped priority mail, and the last thing I know they had been “processed through the sort facility in LA” TWELVE DAYS AGO. I have spent about an hour and a half trying to get to...
