To add if you slam home a new magazine when the slide is locked back it puts the round into battery,releasing slide.

it is more sweat resistant. The pores of horsehide are smaller and prevent sweat penetration more than cowhide. I believe feel free to correct me.

my M&P 9c locks back on the last round being spent. its manufacture date is Feb 2013 just pulled mine out to look. It looks like yours, pretty much when the magazine goes in that lever catches the very side of the plastic on the mag and causes the slide lock to be pushed up.
