    Ship date model 617-1

    Makes sense. Thanks again. S.K.

    Ship date model 617-1

Thank you for replying. What I don't understand is why this serial number CBW3943 does not show in the S&W standards catalog. Somewhere in the standards catalog it explains that the spec order number (Julian date) represents the manufacture date which may or may not be the ship date. I'm curious...

    Ship date model 617-1

Can anyone tell me the ship date of a Model 617-1 with serial #CBW3943? The spec order number on the box is 7086. The standards catalog does not seem to include this serial number. Thanks S.K.

617-1 firing pin occasionally fails to operate

I'm in SC but thank you for that reply. I'll probably send it back to S&W. I'm also glad that I took another look at the cylinder because I was about to take it to the range again this afternoon and as we all know, this is not a gun that should be fired in this condition. Thanks again. S.K.

617-1 firing pin occasionally fails to operate

I owe everyone who replied to this thread an apology, especially Toolguy. I reexamined the cylinder, this time in better light and with much needed eye glasses and indeed there are firing pin dings between 2 chambers. There are a total of 2 dings that partially overlap each other. However, this...

617-1 firing pin occasionally fails to operate

What would cause the firing pin to break all of a sudden? If the firing pin were broken wouldn't it not work at all? This only occurs 1 or 2 times out of 100 rounds. Should the next step be to blast out the firing pin area with an aerosol or compressed air as suggested by one eye joe? Thanks. S.K.

617-1 firing pin occasionally fails to operate

Yes, if it continues and there aren't any simpler solutions I will probably send it back to S&W because I'm concerned that removing the side plate may be tricky, even though I'm fairly proficient with mechanical stuff (tools & machinery). I think that I may be over oiling it so I'm going to stop...

617-1 firing pin occasionally fails to operate

The firing pin looks fine and hammer looks fine (from what I can see). There are no dings around the chambers. My guess is the hammer is stopping before it gets to the firing pin and if so, why? Thanks for replying. S.K.

617-1 firing pin occasionally fails to operate

Hello, This is a 617-1 that has never had a misfire problem. However, during the last few trips to the range it has failed to fire one or two times for every 100 rounds. The difference here is that when it misfires there is no strike mark at all on the unfired casing while the other casings have...

ORIGINAL GRIPS ON MODEL 617 NO DASH

I didn't purchase the gun new. Also, CS can stand for carbon steel, stainless cylinder, or combat stocks depending on the time period of the gun. I believe that it stood for combat stocks during the time period the 617 no dash was manufactured. This is according to the S&W standards catalogue...

ORIGINAL GRIPS ON MODEL 617 NO DASH

Hello, I have a 617 no dash that has magna grips. Every other 617 no dash that I've ever seen has combat grips which leads me to believe that the magna grips are not the original grips. However, I also have the original 1 piece box for the gun and under the features section on the box label it...

MODEL 617 CYLINDER AND TRIGGER LOCKING UP

Last week I applied some blank ink to the recoil shield with a sharpie and fired some rounds. As a result there were some distinct rub marks in the inked surface that proves that unseated rounds were rubbing against the recoil shield. Surprisingly, the ink seemed to reduce the binding, probably...

MODEL 617 CYLINDER AND TRIGGER LOCKING UP

Yes, but simple movement of the gun will or could cause one or more live rounds to slide back. After about 60 shots are fired the binding stops. I attribute this to the charge hole getting dirty thus holding the rounds more firmly. Of course the cylinder getting hotter may also help prevent the...

MODEL 617 CYLINDER AND TRIGGER LOCKING UP

I will do that. However, as I stated earlier, I have a live round that was in the gun during a bind up and there are obvious scrape marks on the head. The other rounds in the cylinder during the bind up (both live and spent) had no such marks. Also, when shining a flashlight into the opposite...

MODEL 617 CYLINDER AND TRIGGER LOCKING UP

Headspace is about .010. I believe that rounds (probably unfired) are backing out of the cylinder and binding up against the recoil shield. I'll be working more with it this weekend. Thanks. S.K.
