The same gun was listed back in March of last year. It went up to $4000 but didn’t meet the reserve. It had much better pictures this time though, which probably helped it sell.

I have seen 3-inch Model 49s a few times before, very rare! Can't recall if they were square butt though. If you get the chance, buy it. Definitely worth a lot more than the price stated!

Red ramp inserts were available from the factory starting in the early 1950's (1953 I believe) but they had to be special ordered. Later on, as they became more popular, I think S&W began making up batches of particular guns with the RR on their own.

There shouldn't be a hole completely through the top strap of the gun. Later N frames were drilled and tapped for scope mounts but I believe that the M28 was discontinued before that engineering change. Hopefully someone with more experience will come along shortly that can give you a better answer.
