    saw a 27-2 5in

Definitely "finish challenged". Penetrating oil soak and rub with a copper penny (real copper, pre-1982 penny), bronze wool, or genuine Chore Boy pure copper pot scrubber will remove the crusty stuff without further damage, but I am pretty sure I see some pitting on the cylinder. I'd class...

    saw a 27-2 5in

Definitely sounds like a shooter grade Model 27 and one with finish issues. The lack of original stocks detracts from its value. I'd say it is definitely not a $1000 revolver. Depending upon how bad the finish really is and if it is mechanically sound, I'd WAG it as worth $500-$800.

    Aluminum Frame / Steel Slide

You will not have galling issues, but if you run the pistol without oil or light grease on the rails, the steel slide will quickly wear into the aluminum. I like to use a very thin smear of white lithium grease on the slide rails of all of my pistols, regardless of whatever metal in the slide...

Not all barrels are created equal and some are "faster" than others.

Not really, unless the gap is absurdly large.

    R&S Recoil Buffers for a 4006TSW

Replacing the recoil spring every 1000 rounds is probably overkill, but recoil springs are cheap, broken slides and receivers are expensive or even irreplaceable.

    R&S Recoil Buffers for a 4006TSW

During my USPSA days, I often ran a buffer in my 1911. They do shorten the distance the slide will travel and in the 1911, that means you likely must use a longer ejector and there is the possibility of the recoil spring's coils touching each other, which creates a whole new can of worms. A...

    Beater guns?

So far, all of my S&W pistols have been purchased as used firearms. All showed some degree of wear, but I bought them to use, not to admire.

    Another model 39

Nice Model 39. The white outline rear sight and color insert in the front sight were definitely aftermarket modifications. I'd say someone actually relied upon such a pistol for defensive purposes.

    R&S Recoil Buffers for a 4006TSW

A heavier recoil spring will not do a whole lot to delay unlocking of the barrel or the rearward velocity of the slide during recoil, but it will impart more energy into the slide as it moves forward, slamming the barrel into lock up with more force. That extra force is going to be transmitted...

The longer the sight radius, the easier it is to see sight misalignment, which makes it easier to shoot accurately.

    29-2 ammo

That definitely qualifies as a "light special" 44 Magnum load.

    Model 12 questions

Revolvers with aluminum and scandium frames and/or cylinders truly are meant to be carried a lot and shot a little. They are not as strong as steel or stainless steel. If you plan on shooting one a lot, my suggestion is to also look for a comparable model that has a steel or stainless steel...

What Have I Done to My Glock?

A 2 pound trigger on a striker fired pistol? No thanks. As to owning a Glock, I still don't, but am tempted as I see Glocks everywhere.
