have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

As promised this is my 1909 box. It's interesting to me that the box is marked No.2 of 1910 but the cartridges are head stamped 2 11

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

Since you fine gentlemen are far more knowledgeable than me on the old ammo subject I hope someone can tell me when the 45long Colt was first loaded with smokeless powder. I have a box of Colt model 1909 ammo that states smokeless but they are not truly 45LC. Anyone know when Frankford Arsenal...

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

Model19man I did start reading the link that you mentioned. I should of wrote a lower FPS load. I did find a company named Buffalobore that claims to load a 44-40 with the same pressures as the original ammo. Of course I still would like to load a few myself. I appreciate the help with the...

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

Yes the stocks are not factory. Dave's father put them on. He still has the original grips. I have never seen them but would like to see if they have a serial number on the back side. I appreciate the insight on the cylinder star. I broke the news to Dave last night that the gun his father ought...

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

Good Idea. I reload the 44-40 so I know exactly what you mean by the bottleneck. I always thought of it as a 45Lc that had been wildcatted or necked down. I am convinced it's Frontier model. I will wait until tomorrow to break the news. BTW Dave knows his Father way over spent on it. He paid...

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

I just reread BMur's post and I think he explained it very nicely. I guess what I need now is a manufacture date by the serial number. Sounds like it is not as old as we thought. Thats why I go to the forums for help. I love being able to find truly knowledgeable people that are willing to...

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

[/IMG] This is getting very interesting to me. I understand how Dave's Dad could of submitted incorrect information on this gun when requesting the letter. So please tell me one more time what exactly this is so I can pass the correct information on to my friend. Please state the 2 serial...

have a few question regarding an early smith & wesson 44 double action first model re

Thanks iby, that is the factory letter. Good point about no 44-40 made in 1881. I see this type thing with re-barreled colt SAAs often. After doing a quick search the front sight looks to be the correct shape but taller than the ones on line. Did they offer different sizes to tune in POI?
