I really apreciate all of your feedback. It turns out that the guy that told me that I could "exchange" it was wrong. He was also incorrect when he said the gunsmith would get a barrel nut and put it on, the rifle has been sent back to S&W. I feel better about this method of resolution...

I took the rifle back tonight. The shop/gunsmith is ordering the barrel nut from S&W and installing it as well as looking through the rifle for any other issues. I had a choice of returning it for a new one (with another background check) but went with the repair. Does anyone think this...

I will have it checked out. I do not see any broken rail parts but there is also no nut on the threads of the barrel. When I cleaned it the barrel slid right back toward the stock...did they forget the barrel nut at the factory....don't know......thanks!

We have only fired 200 rounds, didn't leave any parts or pieces behind at the range, not even sure where the barrel nut or end cap are (new to this). Where should I look? Thanks!
