    Loading 38 Special wad cutters.

For the hollow base wadcutter, I like Bullseye or 231 powder, which is a pretty conventional choice.

Is that old S&W revolver as reliable as you think??

Yes - I found Sellier & Bellot .38 special ammunition to be a nightmare for reliability. I had some that refused to eject properly from a Model 19. I also had some where the primers deformed and bound up a single action USFA revolver. With better ammunition, I've had no problems from my...

    More lead

I shoot at a multi-sport club where we have fire arms and air gun ranges. I'm on good terms with the range officers. When they empty the back stops of lead, I buy buckets full at a discount. Air gun pellets are sleepers. The better pellets are pretty much pure lead and the range traps hold many...

    .22 LR questions

I haven't had CCI Minimags in awhile, but they were good the last time I used them, which was a couple years ago. I stocked up on CCI Standard Velocity back when Dick's Sporting Goods had it locally for $20 per brick. I am still using up that stock in my Savage 1919 NRA. I prefer the Standard...

    Positive feedback for sbowenjr

I bought a .38 spl hand ejector from sbowenjr. He was helpful describing the revolver and kept good communication the entire time. I picked it up this past week and shot it this weekend - very happy with my purchase and experience. I recommend sbowenjr if you are considering buying from him.

    Saving old brass

Me too. I shoot it until it develops a problem (usually a mouth split many loadings in) and recycle once that happens. Revolver brass can last a long time. I shoot a lot of black powder as well, so tarnished brass is something that doesn't bother me.

38 Special loads for 4" fixed sights

I shoot mostly 158 gr lead ammunition: semi-wadcutters or lead round nosed bullets. I'm using up a bunch of 700X and Trail Boss powders I acquired during the last shortage. The 700X does not meter as well, but they are both very consistent and accurate. It's hard to top the 158 gr family of...

Lack of civility in the reloading forum.

In some things there is no single right way. People argue over many things in reloading, but several people with differing opinions can all be "right". There is more than one way to produce high quality ammunition. People sometimes get to a point where there is only one answer in their mind...

    Hodgdon 700-X

I am working through several pounds of 700x and of Trail Boss. The 700x is consistent, clean, and accurate in .38 spl. It does not meter well for me, at least compared to the Trail Boss. I suggest weighing each charge of 700x if using in a similar handgun charge. 700x was one of few powders...

    New to reloading with questions

My experience was that I did ultimately save some money through reloading - not a great amount, but some. I did shoot a little more, but not so much more as to overcome the savings per round compared to buying ammo. The biggest advantage was the ability to make very consistent, mild shooting...

    SQUIB LOAD

The two places where even an experienced handgun shooter can especially get bitten by a squib are double taps on the revolver and reflexively doing tap-rack-bang on the semi-auto pistol. The last sort-of-squib load I had was actually somewhat recently - I was using Hi Skor 700x powder in .38...

Never thought I'd be asking this ,but...

I would advise against it. I would stick to your own, single stage press and give friendly, informal advice to new people once in awhile. I like the single stage simplicity for the newer reloaders as well. I also would be wary of potential liability if someone has a reload that blows up a gun...

    New to reloading with questions

My choice for target bullets in the .38 spl is a 158 gr, lead bullet, usually relatively soft alloy and a mild roll crimp of the case. If you are serious about target work, I like the 148 gr hollow base wadcutter, also of relatively soft lead. If you have to use covered lead, the 125 gr plated...

Trail Boss and jacketed bullets are a no go

Does anyone know when and what prompted the manufacturer to move from dissuading reloaders from using jacketed bullets with Trail Boss? It has been one of a couple powders I use for several years, and when I started using it, they warned to use only lead bullets with it. The reloading manuals I...
