Default New Model 36 owner and member with question

Hello from the coast of South Carolina!
My stepfather (Retired Detective) recently made me the proud owner of his S&W Model 36. He is in his eighties now and said that he carried this revolver back in the 50's.
Serial #J98XXX - would this be the correct age? Based on a serial # search I come up with 1969 - 70. He does have a collection of service revolvers and I am not sure if his memory is 100%.
When opening the cylinder, it reads MOD. 36
Under the manufacturing #'s there is a T which also appears when the grips are removed. Any significance to this letter?
I have attached photos of the revolver.

With the new pachmayr grips

Any help would be appreciated.
Fantastic Forum!

Yes, your Chief's Special was manufactured in 1970 according to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. Hope this helps, this book has a wealth of S@W information and I would strongly recommend that you purchase a copy. Plus it's just interesting reading. Welcome to the forum.
