Hello All!
It is HOT here in South Arkansas! I joined to seek info on my pistol, but this is really interesting. Anyway, I am wanting info such as manufacture date and value of my S&W 38 Special CTG. It is nickel plated or nickel, I'm not sure. It has a 4" barrel and a serial number of 12000. I do not know what model and it does not have any info on that on the gun. I seem to think it is sort of old, just not sure. Any help out there? Thank you.

Welcome from Iowa.
Please give us more info. Does it have adjustable or fixed sights? Is the number you gave from the bottom of the butt? A picture would help, and I'll bet we can tell you some info on it.

If there are no letters before that number it is indeed quite old. It would be a Military and Police model from about 1901 or so. If there is a V,S,C or D it is a bit newer. I look forward to the pictures.

Thanks Jim. Will come back to this post and put pics ASAP. There is no doubt there is no letter in the serial. Great!

Yes it does help.
That's a .38 Military and Police 1st Model. It appears that the ejector rod has been replaced, but other than that it looks pretty good for a revolver that's more than 110 years old. If you plan to shoot it, have a gunsmith check it out, And, of course only use standard pressure loads.
I'll bet there's a story behind it, right?

Wow! That is really cool. I do need to have it checked out. I have a screw missing, the one down close to the trigger. But I have had this gun for about 18 yrs. I have been shooting it actively until the last couple of years. I live in a small community and my parents built house even deeper in woods in 1979. But I loved it. Our closest neighbor was an old man of another race, we loved him. My dad gave him $50 for the pistol in 1980 and my dad gave it to me after the man died and I moved in his house by myself. I really felt protected with that gun. And I will use it today if I can't get my hands on one of my other ones I keep stashed everywhere! Thanks again for the input.

Welcome aboard Lady4wr from the great state of Pennsylvania!
If you are very serious about documenting your new puppy - you can Request a Factory Letter which will research the date of manufacture, first recorded shipment destination, etc.
