Arizona TransPlant/Southerner and American by the grace of God
Back in the late 80's I would show up at the Rio Salado Shooting range in Arizona, about 25 miles as the crow flies east of Phoenix. They had a revolvers only match every month. There were a lot of good fellas that showed up. The revolver guys sort of had the reputation of being laid back and not so serious or nose up in the air like the boys with their $2000 tricked out speed gun semis.
Vic Pickett was the best out there, 2nd only to Jerry Mic.
Pickett shot his S&W 8 shot, as I remember a 38 super. You could tell he enjoyed his beer in off hours, walked with a limp and had a personalized plate on his vehicle that said '8 shot', yet he was 2nd best revolver shooter in the world, and he'd talk to you, was down to earth and just a good ole boy.
I had my old fashioned model 29 blued and didn't know any better than to shoot factory load 44 magnums. No speed load moon clips or the like, but would just hand load them every time after firing my six. At one stage, you were to shoot all six round plates and holster your gun. With my full load 44, I shot the first plate and due to the impact, all 6 fell down. With nothing else to shoot, I quickly holstered and stopped. The timer guy shouted out my 0.something time which of course was the best time. He said I beat Pickett and we had a new champ. Everyone laughed, including Vic.
Usually Old John showed up to this match. He was in his 80's year old man who also shot his old .44 magnum S&W. He always said he didn't like these new 'automatic' guns, that the revolver was still the best, simple and even if laid down and put away for 25 years, you could pick it up, pull the trigger and shoot it with no problem, no jamming.
He'd shuffle from target to target, take careful aim and fire off six with a semi steady hand, and everyone enjoyed him being there to show you could still practice and shoot at his age. A few years later, Old John didn't show up. He'd passed away. Must have shot his last shoot around age 90m, but was an inspiration to us all to still be throwing lead down range up to 90 with his S&W revolver. I hope to be too in 20 years.
I miss those days and the revolver guys, mostly S&W. Now in Colorado, my favorite is still the .44
Hello all.

WELCOME
From W. central Fl. That's a nice story & good for you, for shooting.Even though I consider my group of shooters laid back, my steel challenge weekly practice may consist of 20 - 30 people. That would slow things to a crawl & you would be Dq'd at some point for "delay of game,( I just made that name up.) Speed loaders are strongly
encouraged. Many shooters would offer to share their speed loaders, if they were using one that would fit your gun.

Howdy all. Isn't it funny that most gn owners/S&W men, are from the south...(Ohio too is almost southern)
Didn't hear any welcomes from NY or Kalifornia or the like; go figure.
