So I am here now...don't panic
My name is Josh; retired Marine CWO, Father, Husband, current gov't employee. Long time scout leader, offroader, camper and shooter.
Not long ago both my wife and son (19yo) have expressed an interest in shooting hand guns but both felt my 45 was too much. I recently picked up a post-war 38-44, as I have always felt a 38 revolver is an excellent platform for learning handgun shooting.

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.
A 4" 686+ revolver is a favorite among everyone I teach to shoot. Everyone shoots it well, without a lot of drama.

That heavy frame 38-44 should be a great experience for all. 38 spl will be a light recoil; bump it up to 38 +P for a little more excitement. If you are a handloader, a healthy load of Unique behind a 158 g. bullet will show you what the gun is truly capable of.

An Alternative Solution
If you are a hand loader or have a friend who can hand load for you (that friend can't sell hand loads without a federal license) I found that 4.5 grains of Bullseye behind a 200 grain Missouri cast bullet, round nose, flat point, provides a very pleasant, mild recoiling load in both my S&W 1911 and my M&P. The load positively ejects with the factory standard recoil spring in both guns.

Lots of "retired" law officers here besides famous writers and ex-soldiers.
I am a crusty newbie and have already learned things.
So,,,,Welcome,,, and look forward to your posts!

Welcome to the forum. Get a K frame .22 and then work up to a K frame .38. You'll never regret it.
