Me thinks I might like to have a Maine Coon now that I've grown to love cats, yeah, go figure. Anyone have one, and what can you tell me about them ? Thanks in advance, Shoo

Rescued this old guy from the Maricopa animal shelter. Chose an older cat (6-7 yrs?) as they are less likely to get a home.

Maine Coon we call "Hey You" as he did not answer to the name on his tag :) after 3 years he is fat and lazy but can jump like superman.

Maine Coons are great cats - very laid back, but also very playful - with or without your assistance. Our current coon (Mikey) is just under two yrs, and just over 20 lbs ! He was a rescue cat, like all of ours. He and his best buddy, Conan are wrestling / running/ chasing machines ...... But yes, Maine Coons are fantastic cats ! Check out mainecoonrescue.net , or your local shelter.

Pop's2, your Hey, You looks like one of our previous Maine Coons - and yes, they can jump like you wouldn't believe. Did I forget to mention that they are also very strong ?

Hey Shoo. I hope all is well and you are getting back in form. We have a black one that my daughter rescued from a shelter in Florida. She is black with a white patch on her chest. She is very "chatty" with a great personality. The biggest challenge is keeping her groomed. She is an indoor cat and does shed quite a bit. We usually take her to the groomer for a "lion" cut in the summer. Over all she is a great cat and I can recommend the breed highly.

I hope that helps.

As far as I know they have a little "M" on their forehead-We keep rescuing the critters trying to find one-I think our orange tom has the "M"-but his sister is just a little tubby house cat! Personnaly I like the ones that will talk to you-I even rescued some poor old stray from St. Louis-125 miles from here! My son left his blind cat with us with he deployed-she was special.

Gee, I wonder who is King around your place.:D
Great picture

My daughter had one for years -- again, a rescue. They are huge cats, extremely strong, and hers had a wonderful temperament. I doubt you will be disappointed if you get one.

do it ... fine breed of fur person.
I had a few that would sleep across my shoulders while I worked in the shop and when things were ticking me off ... bring me the gift of dead thing ... the highest honor a cat can bestow upon its human:D

We just lost our Maine Coon that was 16 year old. She was a great companion. They can be trained, but it takes work. She wouldn't leave the yard and would come inside when called or told to get inside.

They have a vocabulary, after a while you will pick up sounds they make. If you say out every time you let them out, eventually they can tell you when they want to go out.

They are a very vocal breed, lots of fur, need to be brushed, and are very playful. They also have very large front claws to go with the rest of their largeness....and they are very sharp! Usually ours would only hit me with her paw when we played, but everynow and then she would snag me with a claw or three.

We have lost two of our cats in the last 3 years and have one mean Siamise mix left. We will probably start looking around the shelters in town and see if we can find a suitable replacement.

Our Maine Coon loved to ride in the car, she would stand on the seat looking out the window watching things go by, the strangest was at night when her head would swivel back and forth as she watched the reflectors on the roadbed go by. :)

Maine Coons are a great breed, huge, sweet and lots of personality. Kind of like the labs of the cat world. They also have a high incidence of heart disease so keep that in mind when you are looking and have your friendly neighborhood veterinarian give him a good listen after you get him and twice yearly after that.

they also make a unique backup to your alarm clock.
Mine do this gentle poke and lick routine at the start of the day.
yeah ... you can train them ... but understand that they'll train you back

My wife has wanted one for a long time. She's more of a cat lover than I am, but I did get a little attached to our last one. I've heard that Maine Coons are very laid back and kinda dog like. How are they with kids? And dogs? I guess it would be a bit of a crap shoot with a rescue under these circumstances.

Maine Coon Cats..The gentile giants!

Aye .
We were owned by 2. They lived to be almost 20 years old.
"Brutus. died 10-15-98. When I cross over to the other side, part of my ashes will be placed in his grave. He lies next to his brother just outside our kitchen window.
Don't forget they are LARGE!. Ours loved to play with golf balls
at 0300 hrs!
Pat and I have a home on the Isle of Man. For 6 months each year. Now we have a Manx.
Maine Coons are very, very special 4 legged ,furry people.
Cheers.
Bud,Pat,and Victoria.

had one that was only part maine coon, we have bad luck with cats, not much better with dogs just when i start to bond with them they go get there selfs killed from what i can tell they make great pets, i always wanted a bobcat or a coon

My first pet when I started living on my own was a Maine Coon that my brother gave to me when he got married. His wife couldn't stand a cat that would proel the kitchen counters and when I was living with my brother that cat and I grew real close. In his prime he was a 20 lbs. of very lean Tom who hated other cats but really liked dogs, a result of his being raised from a kitten by my brothers first dog. Had him until he was 16, when I came home from work and found him in the beginning of congestive heart failure. I cried like a baby when the Vet told me the best thing to do was to put him to sleep.

As for the qualities, lots of hair left behind on whatever lap was handy. VERY playful, one of his favorite toys was a rubber casting weight attached to my fishing pole, I could get him going like a whirling dervish with that rig. Also a real "talker" and very affectionate, he would always great me on arriving home except for that last day. He would also come when called and occasionally would play Fetch, something I've never seen another cat do. Finally, VERY inquisitive, there was never a box or bag on the floor that didn't get very carefully investigated.

BTW, out of respect for his Dogness, I've only had dogs since then. Quite simply, I just don't think I could ever find another cat that could measure up. The good news is the shelter dogs I've had since have been every bit as good as a companion.

RIP Mitsy, it's been 18 years since you passed and you are still remembered very fondly.

Whoa! A couple of Guinness' and I misread the title as Maine Coon Caps, then saw the pics of cats............did a little double take there...

That aint their favorite toy man ... Their favorite toy is the ball of fur you gather from the couch.

yeah arent they articulate little fluffballs ... they sing too ... sometimes when Im playing guitar .. if he is in the mood, the meowing starts ... usually close enough to being in key

Finally, VERY inquisitive, there was never a box or bag on the floor that didn't get very carefully investigated.
they prefer the term "cat scan".
its one of the many services they provide after they train you.

I've got one that is partially Maine Coon, I think. He thinks he is a dog and challenges anybody who comes to the house, following them around and hissing at them. He's never done anything to anybody other than hiss at them, though. When it's just us here, he's a very friendly cat.
