After watching violent crime increase and reading this forum for the past several months, I took the recommendation of several on here and bought a 442-1 no IL for pocket carry from Cabelas.

For those who might not know, Cabelas will price match any brick and mortar store within 100 miles that has the gun in stock. I went to galleryofguns.com and searched within a 100 mile radius. Cabela's price was $430. Found one in stock nearby for $380 (another LGS was $368 but none in stock). With 10% Cabela's coupon plus some Cabela's Visa points, ended up with what I thought was pretty good deal.

Shot it yesterday and I love this gun! Was surprised how manageable it was with 38+P. Was expecting it to sting my hand, like my friend's Ruger LCR does. But +P in the Smith was milder than 38 special in the Ruger.

Next step...get ccw permit.

This is my second Smith; other one is 29-5.

Good Buy!

Are those grips plastic or rubber? Mine were different than yours and rubber which caught in pockets, etc. I got a set of Altamont smooth rosewood color and like them. Grips are a very personal choice. The smooth wood seemed to make recoil even less.

Kinda wish I had a 442 instead of 642 (ie, black instead of silver). But they weren't around when I got mine (other than used and they were all junky that I found).

They are nice guns. The Speer 135gr Gold Dot was made for snubbies like this.

I have killed 2 snakes with mine, using CCI shot cartridges. I usually have 2 snake shot in mine when I'm out in the woods or yard.

You will enjoy it.

Grips are rubber. Haven't tried pocket holster yet so dont know if they will stick yet. Will probably try some wood grips later. They had 642 for same price but liked the black better. Thanks for the recommendation.

Will keep that in mind, as I'm moving to CO soon and they have Cabela's there. Like that gun a lot. Bud

Buds has them for $20 cheaper than your lowest price mentioned, $360. Always check Buds before you buy a gun. Not always the best price, but if you can beat it elsewhere you got a very good price.

And never buy anything, ever, from Cabela's unless they're the only place that carries it. They're always overpriced.

Could you please tell me where you got the 10% coupon? Thanks.

Great choice you made getting a 442. I only sold my 442-1 because I prefer the lighter weight, better sights, more durable finish, and .357 capability of the 340 M&P, but the 442 is a tough value to beat.

Good choice man, I got a 642 for myself. The only reason really was that I got it for $380 when most local shops only had the 442 and wanted upwards of $450 for them.

M13/17 I also have a 642 and i also carry the same ammo setup that you described. it works great for me. My 642 is in my pocket from the time I put my pants on in the morning until I get ready for bed. It then rests on my nightstand. This is one gun that I will keep, and use for a long time.

Don't know where that price is from, and probably a good deal for you.

However: $380 minus 10% coupon, plus tax and we are now at $365, which is about Bud's price. Including some Cabelas points I cashed in the final OTD price was $259. That's the best deal I could find.

By the time you add even normal ffl fees it's cheaper the way he got it...

As far as Cabela's prices even if they are not always the lowest if you buy in store the experience is worth it! Besides they have a big selection you can see and handle in person which costs money and to staff etc etc...
I would imagine though guys like you that whine about price so much have no issues going somewhere to handle/ look at guns n stuff in person tying up another stores resources only to purchase elsewhere... I have seen it many times before... I think people like that are worse than the high priced stores, at least the stores are not stealing...

Fortunately I don't have to pay normal FFL fees. I pay $10.

He got it cheaper due to cabela's points. He'd be better off with a better credit card that offers more in cash back like 5% gas or 2% everything.

There are stores that treat their customers easily as well and charge far better prices.

I'm not sure about the whining comment. I don't see my post as anything close to whining.

We do happen to agree about handling guns and buying them there. It might be the only thing we agree on, and when it comes to money issues on a gun board maybe that's a good thing for me. I do believe that if one uses a B&M store's stock to help them make gun buying decisions they need to buy from that store or another B&M store. The B&M store needs to be competitive with local in stock prices; thus any B&M with it in stock is OK. One does need to pay for the ability to handle guns if they're going to benefit from that ability.

Another consumer principal I stand for: I will never buy from a store that only matches a price. That's horrible for us consumers. That allows that store to set high prices and screw others and then only sell for a good price if someone can find a good price. Buy from the original store who gave the consumer a good price up front.

Lowest price is not the only thing that should drive. Ones decision, I would imagine you are not at the bottom of the worlds pay for the job you do... If you are not then your employer is dumb for paying more than they do.... According. To your logic anyhow.

Got mine at Tanner's in Jamison, PA for $361 - they always have great prices and they sell on Gunbroker.

Good deal all the way around. Nobody should complain about the price you paid. You got a nice gun and you like it. That's all that matters.

You're on the right track (except you might want to buy a good holster too). The 442/642 line must be one of S&W's best selling products (and I've got both).
