I have to go to Detroit in the near future, the hotel was booked for me. I'll be staying at the Greektown Hotel & Casino (not a gambler so no bonus for that). No choice in the matter. It's a quick trip-in late on a Thursday, out early on following Sunday-any insight to the place? Thanks.

It's nice hotel downtown. If you're in and out in a few days and you aren't paying, one is as good as the next at that level of quality. There's a "People Mover" (light, elevated rail) station right there so you can explore the downtown area OK without having to drive. But it's Detroit...so there is parking available everywhere for not too much money if you feel you need to drive. Greektown isn't as good as it used to be before the casinos came in, but try the honey/custard rolls at the Astoria Bakery right on Monroe. You can walk over from the hotel. My favorite places are closed now but Pegasus restaurant is still pretty good. Also on Monroe. How much free time are you going to have in the evenings? Cliff Bell's is an excellent jazz club on Park and Montcalm. It was closed for many years and then restored and reopened. It's a sweet art deco-like bar. You'll think you were transported back to the '30s. They have great live music almost every night. Check their website. You may also want to try the Bucharest and get a shawarma sandwich to go. They're right by Cliff Bell's and I think they're open all night. Best place for that kind of food outside of Dearborn. I think the People Mover can also get you pretty close to the Fox Theater at Park and Woodward, and Comerica Park where the Tigers play is right across the street from there. Or you can find ample parking near Cliff Bell's/Fox Theater if you're out after the People Mover is shut down for the day. Downtown is quite safe and is has been really picking up and developed. Not as much as other downtowns but I wouldn't worry about getting robbed or raped or anything if you stick around the downtown area like Greektown, Fox Theater, Woodward near the ball parks, Cliff Bell's etc...Have fun. There's also a small theater inside the Hockeytown Cafe. They have comedy and various other shows in there. I'd get out of the casino/hotel in the evenings if you can. Nothing to do in there.

Any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Incidentally....they filmed several scenes from "Kill The Irishman" about Danny Greene at Cliff Bell's......

Keep an eye on the Zimmerman Trial since you don't say when soon is, who knows if there will be riots if he's acquitted?
