Which Do You Prefer .22 short, 22 CB Long, 22 Sub-Sonic

I am trying to decide which of the above is first of all the least noisy round and which is the most effective as far a knock down power. Right now I am leaning towards the .22 CB Long rounds, but I have not tried the 22 Sub-Sonic or the .22 short rounds.

For the combination you are looking for you may want to consider Aguila SSS 60gr.

I use CCI Standard Velocity for suppressed shooting. Never get a supersonic crack when used in a rifle.

What do you hope to knock-down with a .22? :confused:

I like the .22 Colibris. I shoot them inside from my revolvers. But as for knock-down power? I shot a mouse in a trap (in the garage)from about 4ft with a .22 Colibri outta my 4in Mod.63. The bullet actually bounced back off the mouse and hit me in the leg , bounced off my pant leg and landed in front of my feet.

I shoot Remington CB Longs outta my single shot Savage Falling Block for pests now.
 
i use some sellier& bellot flobert rounds they are just little "acorns" surprisingly quiet from a rifle but from a revolver they are still too loud for urban pest control.
shooting at a 2x4 in the yard, the bullet striking the board was louder than the report . might be because i was behind the rifle, but quiet none the less.

how quiet are these colibris rounds in a revolver? would the neighbours hear the shot? assuming it was fired on a typical 1/4 acre lot.
well i guess if it cant penetrate a mouse, it wont help my magpie situation, but it would be fun to shoot in the house once in a while
 
Good luck finding anything thats quiet in a revolver.

Get urself a good bolt gun or a pump and then u'll have it made.
 
I tried the cb short in a old win. pump and semi auto and they did not have the accuracy that the cb long gave me, plus the cb long was a lot easier to load.

The 40gr sub-sonic HP works a lot better on larger pest than the 29gr solid with as good or better accuracy but also carries a little more noise when fired.
I usually buy more cb longs due to the lower price than the sub-sonic loads from cci,in my area stores.
Plenty good for 25 yard work but they are not tac drivers at 50 yards in my guns, both with 4x scopes.
 
Colibri Super from Aguilla. The Supers are a couple hundred FPS faster than the standard Colibri

I buy them a case at a time for use with new students that are afraid of firearms.

These are 20 grain projectiles loaded with no powder.

Over 500FPS with zero recoil from a Model 17. More like 600FPS from a Henry Lever action

Not sure what you are trying to knock down, but these have rid my an my brothers homes of Possum and Racoons.

I shoot cb's in the closed two car garage. I have a two by four 1/8 inch sheet of aluminum. Made a bar to hold a thick phone book. I place a sticky note on the book for a target. Shoot from about ten feet with a model 34 snub. the sheet is leaned at a slight angle against my roll around tool box. No negatives to report.
 
I like the CB's in short or long. I believe the MV is the same for both. I don't know how quiet the others are, but with my old Remington Model 41 Targetmaster, all I can hear is the firing pin strike as if the gun were empty.

There really is not much knock down power though. Probably just a little more than a Benjamin .22 cal pump air rifle. It will knock a squirrel out of a tree, but not anything bigger. JMHO, I really haven't shot anything live with them. Might take a possum up close.

The .22 short is a little more powerful and a little louder.

I have shot the Colibri ammo and I do not like it. I have also shot the CCI CB Shorts and CCI CB Longs and while they are good they only shoot a 29gr bullet. The new CCI Quiet-22 ammo is almost as quiet and the CB ammo but shoots a 40gr bullet instead. None of the CCI ammo requires the use of hearing protection, they are all that quiet and all are accurate too.

For short range dispatch of vermin I use CCI 22 Short CB caps.
 
It is the rapidly expanding gas that makes the noise (bang) assuming our bullet is subsonic. The gas is far better contained in the long barrel of a rifle than in the short barrel (with cyl gap) of a revolver or pistol. A semiauto rifle with allow the gas to escape out the action and will give a louder report.

I have issues with garden invaders in my yard - mostly rabbits. I have close neighbors and do not want noise but need to remove the problems. Lately I have been using CCI 22 lr cartridges marked QUIET and listing a mv of around 750 fps. I use a scoped bolt action single shot with a 24" barrel and get hardly any noise from it. These rounds are very nearly as quiet as a 22 short cb and are very accurate.

I use RWS subsonic exclusively through my 77/22. It's a 40 grain bullet that is consistently subsonic, very quiet, and accurate to the extreme. The AAC Scarab keeps it very quiet. Just a point on the speed of sound; the temperature of the air is the greatest factor on when that speed is reached.

Just enter a temp and hit the tab key. You can see that really extreme temps, like -40 changes things a lot. A change of 30f can make the bullet go super sonic, depending on its velocity.
