I'd be real careful with WD40, it will dissolve some plastics. (no experience with M&P plastic but I've seen what it does to plastic plumbing, it dissolves certain plastics and it also makes a wonderful adhesive remover) If you use it and it hasn't turned your pistol to mush it's probably all right.

It won't harm a polymer gun. At the worst it can make the grip slippery if you get enough on there, but it can be cleaned off with any degreaser like 409.
