Ruger Sp101 - The Other J Frame

I recently read a review on snub nose files of the 3 inch barreled version of the Ruger
sp101 and the writer compared it to the S&W model 65.

So the ruger sp101 is more like a S&W K-frame .357 magnum revolver instead of a J-frame .357 magnum revolver.

No. It's sort of in between, but compares more closely to a J-frame and fills essentially that role.

Smaller than a K and bigger than a J. To me extra weight and size is what makes it appealing. Got a 2" M64 and a 3" M65 and the SP is more comfortable to carry. YMMV.

Been looking for one of these for quite a while now that wasn't over priced. Put fifty rounds of 357 through it today.

Recoil wasn't bad at all. Trigger is a little heavy but manageable. Accuracy was great as long as I did my part. I like it. ;)

I had a Ruger SP101 just like yours. But I sold it because I discovered a horrible fact: I cannot hit anything very accurately with bobbed-hammer snubbies. I just can't. I need a hammer on my revolvers. A "pin-point" shot is nearly impossible with a bobbed-hammer snubbie.

DEFINE "PINPOINT"

Just because you can't hit as well with a snubbie doesn't mean that goes for everybody. Hitting 5 of 5 steel plates @ 15-18 yards in under a second a piece, while not as fast/accurate as a 4", is pinpoint enough for me if you are talking self defense ranges/ accuracy.

I have a ruger sp101 Talo with the roll engraving that I am very fond of. I consider it my BBQ gun. I don't shoot it as much as I should because I mostly shoot my S&W model 13 when I shoot .357. I love Ruger and S&W both but for different reasons.

I love my snub nose SP-101. It's a little heavier than a J-frame and makes it easier to tame hotter loads. It was also very easy to lighten the trigger pull and maintain reliable ignition by using a spring kit.
