Specifically, I like truck stop diners. I like the kind of food normally found there. It's not good for you, but it tastes good and is filling. The waitresses at these places are almost universally friendly and fun to talk with.

More than that, most of the people you see there are honest working stiffs. They aren't trying to put on a show. They're polite, in a gruff sort of way, but also leave you alone if you want.

It is an experience that is unique to the US. Maybe I'm crazy, but I like them.

It's tough to get a sit down dinner while tooling down the interstate....But....most of the times I see a bunch of 18 wheeler's parked outside, it's not so much the food is all that good, there just isn't anywhere else to park those big rigs.

Now a smaller Mom and Pop joint, that's where the filler up cafe is located. IMO:D

Where else can you find great gifts like these? :)

The food is quite good at most stops.

Nothing crazy about that, Rastoff. I've always liked them.

Some of the best hot roast beef sandwiches with gravy and mashed potatoes, and some of the tastiest restaurant chili, that I've ever had I've found at truck stops. Pies and coffee are nearly always good, and the beaan soup is generally first rate.

This is making me hungry, and I have a pot of chili on the stove. See you folks later.

Cops and long-haul truckers are usually having to get by on fast food due to the nature of their jobs. As a result they KNOW where to go to get good food when they have the time and/or opportunity. Police vehicles and 18-wheelers out front are a guarantee of some good eats inside. I have had some excellent meals in my life but choosing to pull over at A "Choke-n-puke" with these vehicles in their parking lots.

Nothing pretentious about these places. If you go away hungry it's your own fault.

Nothing like a large plate of chipped beef on toast...

I remember taking a Greyhound cross country back in 1997....we stopped in Breezewood, PA and we all got off the bus to get a meal. I can't remember the name of the place I ate (it's been a few years), but I do know it was darn good.

What I like best about truck stop food is breakfast, any time.
Give a plate of eggs & hashbrowns and Ima happy traveler.

But good truck stops with real food are getting few and far between I have found in my last 5,000 or so road miles in the last year. Replaced with fast food franchises, ugh!

You make a very good point When I travel anywhere, I eat where the locals eat. I can eat in a Burger King anywhere and it always tastes the same.

Eat where the locals eat, and you always get a good meal at a good price.

The new truck stops are a real let down on the traditional. Usually a fast food chain or two in the place
That is not always true--so when you can find an old one with a mom and pop operation eatery You need to try it out.
Now---driving a four wheeler makes it easier to find good cafes and I like those places.
Blessings

I agree with the original post, I like to eat at the old style truck stops. Having spent some time on the East Coast, I do miss the old train car diners, I never had a bad meal in any of them.

LostintheOzone:

Unfortunately, when I was in my early 20s, I repossessed tractor-trailers. We would get leads from dispatchers that rigs may be found at certain truck stops. My partner and I would sit in these truck stops waiting for the rig to arrive. When these nice young ladies would approach us for a ride we, would offer to drive them anywhere they wanted to go after we got the tractor-trailer we were repossessing. For some reason, they never came back for the ride. Perhaps the police presence during the repossession put them off. I hated that job.

My Wife and I were just talking about that the other day. Back in the late 70's through the 80's I played music with a couple of bar bands. The bars would close around 1 or 1:30 and there was almost always a truck stop between there and the house. We were remembering the ham and cheese omelets and sausage gravy on home made biscuits. After drinking most of the night 3 or 4 cups of the coffee would get you going again. I think a couple of the truck stops from then are still in operation. I really enjoyed that time of my life, and the truck stop menu for sure.
Peace,
Gordon
