Power Pistol and leadbullets

Looking thru Hornady manual #9 and Speer#14 I see quite a few loads where both use PowerPistol and lead boolits...Hornady loads are for their Dead Soft Swaged offerings. Speer loads are listed using mostly RCBS mold listings...lf Hornady and Speer are comfortable using Power Pistol, then so am l... I don't know more than they do ... How bout Y'all ??

I've shot countless 1000's of rounds of pp/158gr lead bullets in the 357. 8.0gr of pp and any cast lead 158gr bullet to be more specific.

Pp (power pistol) has also been my go to powder for:
38spl p+
44spl
9mm p+
45acp p+

All of those listed above are with either home swaged jacketed bullets or home cast lead/coated bullets.

The last of the "good" alliant reloading manuals was in 2005. After that they started limiting what data they put out. Heck in the last couple of manuals I got from them they don't even bother to list bbl length or pressures.

I have data manuals that do not have barrel length or pressures
that were put out in 2003..................

+1 on they are going down hill with info.

Just to clarify......

A "Flash Ignition" is nothing to laugh at.

One reason rifle loads have a minimum powder loading........
and the same for any metallic case that can have powder at or
below the level of a primer when fired.

A elevated or downward muzzle will reduce the problem but can still create erratic pressures and different fps on loads.

The only time I use less than a 62% volume pistol load (Nosler) is with a 38 special 148 wc target loading.

I was only talking about BE and maybe other non position sensitive powders that I haven't experimented with. You right in that many powders can burn very erratically depending on conditions.

Alliant has definitely.......

Alliant has definitely teed me off with their pushing of BE-86. I want to try BE-86, BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN ANY!

However, I do have a shelf full of BE, Unique, Red Dot and 2400 that I want to use for LEAD loads, along with some lead rifle rounds, having only started shooting lead when the shortages hit. And all of the new coatings beg to be shot.

Well, had practical app session this afternoon with Power Pistol and 158g swaged lead bullets (bullet Mfgr purposely left out) in a SAA .357 and a .38 S&W 10-6 as a proof of concept test batch from the reloading bench.

Overall the loads were accurate but the 357 started leading and blowing smoke almost off the bat and the .38 didn't lead much but turned into a smoking sooty mess.

I don't belive there was any fault of the bullet, I figure in the 357 the swaged bullets were too soft for the load and i may have pushed them too hard, not sure about the .38 as I don't have much experience with reloading or shooting lead bullets. In the end I got a result and I'm heading back to plated or jacketed bullets.

.38 load
158g LSWC over 5.0g Power Pistol with Win primers

.357 load
158g LSWC over 7.5 Power Pistol with Win primers
