I've been on the forum a lot lately and notice that folks are not being careful when posting pictures. Perhaps it's my experience with fraud, managing it, not perpetrating it, though the latter is more profitable I assure you, but I get nervous when I see these things:

1 - If you use Photobucket, or any image hosting site, make sure you have your account marked Private. Otherwise, when you post a picture of your 1917 S&W for everyone to see, they can click on that picture and it opens a new page for them. Now they have access to all the pictures of you hugging Muffles the cat, your last prostate exam, etc., etc. Interesting items for sure, but TMI for most of us here.

2 - Where you at? See, if you don't remove the geo coding from your pictures, all I have to do is right click on the picture, select properties and I can tell the following:
- Name and model of the camera
- Longitude / Latitude of where the picture was taken
- The image settings on the camera
- The focus and speed used to take the picture

Now why would want to share all of the details about how to take the amazing pictures that only you can take! Oh, and the Long/Lat could be an issue as well... Post a picture of you and Muffles on vacation, and I know just where and when to stop by to see some of your items in person...

So take a few minutes and protect yourself.

Please spare me the, "this is why I don't post pictures on the Internet". Trust me, unless you're Amish, chances are that plenty of people know your hobbies. Do you get Cabela's catalogs? Wear a vest? Heck, do you wear flannel? If you do, chances are your neighbors figure you have guns. Yes, we are a stereotyped bunch. Trust me, the mailman in your area knows everything about you and might have even seen your wife naked, while he was dropping the mail through the door (best day ever as a carrier!). Your life isn't as private as you think, just roll with it.

NEVER use your PIN number, unless you're at an ATM. There's no need. Get a Visa/Debit, so it works as a credit card.

NEVER tie your ATM card to the bulk of your money. So, the ATM card ties to a checking accounting, which usually has a rotating balance of monthly bills, not too bad if thieves get that. BUT, don't tie a large savings account to back up that checking account, otherwise they have access to that too! If you want to backup your checking, just use a small savings account to do that. Keep the bulk of your money away from any account that ties to an ATM card.

So take a few minutes, protect yourself, and you can post to your heart's content.

Be safe my friends!

I'll have to check that out. I haven't posted pics in a while and am still using Photobucket. What a PITA that site is.

You don't have to have an account with postimage.org but you can if you want. (I don't, personally.)

The images you upload are kept indefinitely and are not deleted for inactivity.

There's a brief FAQ on the site. I did a lot of checking on the site before I began using it and it came up clean on every site I checked it with.

It's been a pretty useful tool for the limited use I put it to.

The only thing I could access from my thumbnail was the rest of my pictures. Haven't tried someone else's thumbnail to see whether I could access their pictures.

I'm not sure if the iPad holds all that data or not.
Can anybody use the photo to determine where this Thud is located?
Inquiring minds want to know!

My question as well. I usually only use the manage attachments button below and upload from my computer picture file. The one thing that really burns me is when reading an older thread and half the photos of the guns being discussed are not there because photo bucket has dropped the image or the owner closed his account.

The only issue with the thumbnails is that they first appear so small. However, I learned that if you click on the photo it will enlarge and if you click on it again it will enlarge a second time. ;)

Anybody knows how to delete that info from the images on a Mac?

I too have noticed a bunch of pics posted here that led to wide open PhotoBucket accounts. Anyone could burrow into personal pictures from those posted here. Family, kids, cars, homes etc.
I post pics indivdually using TinyPic.com, which is free and ad-riddled but removes all picture data by default and if you don't set up a log-in account it doesn't remember you.

If you're on a computer, connected to the internet, and you insist on posting pictures to an internet site, your location can be discovered. I wadded up my tinfoil hat right after Kennedy was assassinated, we landed on the moon, and the twin towers fell. Do, or do not, there is no try . . .

Appreciate the thoughts, but nothing is private on the web. Once it's out there, it's discoverable . . .

Are you a star wars fan. I think that quote was from Yoda!

Dealing with fraud, or identity theft, is not about prevention, it's about deterrence. You just need to make it hard enough for the thieves that they move on to the next guy. Same as no gun safe is really safe. Some just take longer to get into.
