IMO, Remington is just trying to feed on the current fascination with bottom fed, black guns. You really can't improve much on the 870's original design.
Sure wish they would have never changed from the old standbys like the old 870, 1100, and 700 line. Decent quality and no budget plastic stuff. Real walnut and high polish bluing rules in my book!!

Do you know that the models you mention were considered budget guns and that's what made them so popular? They had a lot more parts that were stamped and they didn't have the quality of Winchester shotguns that had the same functions? A lot of people said the very same things about the Remington shotguns back then that you're saying only they were comparing them to Winchester models. They were budget guns meant to appeal to shooters who wanted to invest less money in a firearm.
