MAT 49

I am already blessed with a Savage built Auto Ordnance Thomson 1928 A1 built around 1941, and a Beretta 93 R (unknown DOB, Beretta HQ won’t reply to my mails).

Now considering adding this SMG made in France.

Looks like an old war horse. Some wear and tear, but the bore seems very nice. Maybe a «carried a lot, shot a little» kind of weapon.

Every French war movies (post WW II) and any movie with «gendarmes» in it featured this SMG, so it’s been a long time fantasy of mine to own one.

There were a lot of these around during the war in Vietnam. When the French left, most were picked up by the NVA and Viet Cong and used against our troops.

I have read that. I imagine they used both the original in 9 mm and the converted one in 7.62 mm Tokarev ?

It's a really splendid film.

BTW. the Jackal had made a rifle that looked like a crutch. I think the caliber was .22 Hornet. Had quite an effect on a melon that he shot in practice. I think it fired explosive bullets.

Yep. The Tokarev ammo was more available to the NVA and VC, so the conversions to that round were quite common. The Tokarev pistols and PPs subguns used that ammo, so it was plentiful.

Never saw the french SMG, but did have the use of a Sweedish K for a while-liked that 36 round Mag.

So I bought it, well, traded another weapon for it.

Folded, carry position

Stock at half position, for very close or hip / point shooting

Stock fully extended for firing from the shoulder

And bonus, it came with two pouches, 4 mags, the original oil bottle and the magazine loader

That’s how they would have been rigged (internet photo)

It did not come with the original sling, so a good old general purpose strap will do for now

(It works well for my Gvt. carbine too)

Found a can of ammo for the MAT 49, 1200 rounds of Austrian Hirtenberger Patronen (HP) L7A1.

Found this abt it on the web :

“Hirtenberger has produced two types of SMG ammunition. Both were developed on request for the British Ministry Of Defence:

L7A1- This ammunition was produced between 1990 and 1992. Many samples exceed the NATO maximum chamber pressure specification for small arms, which is 50,000 PSI (345 MPa). For this reason, the British MOD ceased to use it. It was replaced with:

L12A1- This ammunition is substantially similar, but uses a slightly reduced charge in order to stay under the 50,000 PSI NATO maximum pressure specs.

Both of these rounds feature a 124-grain FMJ ball bullet, and produce a maximum velocity of about 1,500 fps.

Contrary to popular belief, these rounds were not designed for arctic conditions, nor were they developed for the Sterling SMG. They were designed for use in H&K MP5 series SMGs. Although they were undoubtedly tested under arctic conditions, the use of the term "adverse conditions" in its designation is more euphemistic than anything else.

In terms of the commercial availability of these rounds, the MOD released 12 million rounds of L7A1 ammunition as surplus. Since the ammunition is packaged in a 1,200 round case, this means that 10,000 cases were released. Since HP refuses to sell this ammunition to the public, and only produced L7A1 in 1990, 1991, and 1992, and only for the British contract, that means that the entire world's supply consists of 10,000 cases.

Likewise, within several months of release, BATF banned the importation of the ammunition, due to its being unsafe for use in handguns. This second fact makes the ammunition even more rare in the United States.”

I thought I noticed, in the second video, that the MAT49 was less inclined to muzzle rise in full auto than the S&W gun. The Smith didn't climb a lot, but the difference was noticeable.

The weight may have been a factor.

it was 2 kinds of magazine for the mat 49 ordinary 30 shots and a "saharien" model with 20 rounds.
made during the algérian war for the troops in désert or sand country of the South,these magazines are more reliables ,often feed default with the ordinary 30 in the sand
an another model of the mat 49 was made for the parisian police during
the algérian war for fight in PARIS against the fnl and after the OAS (film chacal) very scarce never see one ,only photos
