.300 blackout "Honey Badger" build

My 300 BLK pistol deer hunting rig. I didn’t build it, just slapped a PSA upper onto a PSA lower :), topped with a PA red dot.
I have another PSA lower on the way, might do an SBR, maybe just a carbine.

Nice, is that a brace or stock on it? Picture's too dark on the back side to tell.

Question: What is the make of this pistol brace and buffer tube?

I am casually thinking of doing an AR pistol lower and this looks like a pretty good setup.

By way of explanation for my interest in an AR pistol, here's my situation:

I have a 12.5" .300 BLK upper made by AAC I use with a Thunder Beast 30P-1 suppressor on top of an M16A1. It's a great rig.

For my subsonic rounds I have found H4198 to be just right. I'm loading about 10.9 grains behind a Hornady 208 grain A-Max at an overall length of 2.25". They function perfectly. In a 16" barrel you might need to reduce the powder a bit to keep them subsonic. I don't know how this load would do in a 7" barrel. I have a supply of AA1680 but haven't tried it yet. From all the reports it is a good choice too.

My problem is I want to hunt with the rig, but it is illegal to hunt with a machinegun (even set on semi-auto). At the same time it is illegal for me to use this upper on a semi-auto AR, so I'm stuck in the middle. To use my .300 BLK in the field I can either apply for an SBR ticket (for my semi AR) or I can mount the upper on a pistol lower. I could buy a 16" .300 upper, but then you mount the suppressor and it's ungainly long and would be hard to keep subsonic.

Here's a peek at my .300 BLK setup without the suppressor:

P.S. Here's what it looks like in original configuration (except for the KNS anti-rotation pins):

Curl I'm not familiar with the game laws in VA but it's also illegal to hunt with a full auto weapon here in Missouri but there is a work around here.
By removing the 3-way selector and replacing it with a 2-way thus making it incapable of auto fire it would be legal here you'd have to check your laws to see if that would work for you.

Where do you source it?

I bought that one off eBay for 190 which is about 30 bucks less than the normal price. There are numerous you can purchase them just try a google search or try a eBay search.

Maybe a 2-way selector would work here too. I just don't know. The VA law says "no MGs". I wouldn't want to get in a tight spot over something like that if a game warden was having a bad day.

I see Midway has this item on sale right now!

Another question: What is the maximum length of extension?

Thx,

Fully extended the brace is 8 inches. I'll be using a YHM 7.62 Ultra Light Tactical which I've already purchased and just waiting for it to be released from jail.

Andy-This has been a fun build and thread for me. I turned a Sig MPX into an SBR. 9mm is cheap and fun to shoot. What I didn’t know at the time is all the regulations on SBR’s. Such as notifying the NFA if you want to travel as well as seeking permission from each state you wish to drive through. When the ATF letter came out stating a pistol with a brace could be shouldered, that was a game changer. I bought a Sig PM400 pistol with a 11.3 inch barrel in 5.56. I shot it some and frankly it wasn’t enjoyable. Just loud and obnoxious. So it sat in my safe. Ultimately, I converted it to .300 Blackout and shoot mostly Subsonic rounds. I have a suppressor that works on both the MPX and PM400. Cost of .300 BLK isn’t really an issue for me because honestly I shoot 50 times as many rounds through the 9mm gun. Nice to have the capability of the .300BLK available. I don’t reload. Maybe when I retire. I enjoy hearing about you guys that do for future reference. Enjoy that new gun. Very nice looking piece. Well done sir.

Thank you from the complement I've been building ARs for many years but just started doing pistol about 3 years ago when Sig came out with their first brace and went back and forth with the ATF for a year and a half. The first one I built was for my daughter which has the first style Sig brace and the second was for a friend with the second style Sig brace he went all out on that beast, both are in 9mm. Pic #1 daughters, pics #2 friends.

Love your daughter’s 9mm. I have a Colt AR9 that I kept in my trunk as I travelled because I could shoot it at indoor pistol ranges around a work territory. I’ve had a lot of fun with that one. I have a fair amount of experience shooting 9mm subguns like the HK MP5. That’s really how I ended up with my MPX and two tax stamps.........

From a legal standpoint, are the pistol braces securely in the "legal" establishment? I haven't paid much attention, but I seem to remember there was some debate about it awhile back.

I am also a great fan of the 9mm in an AR. I have a 10.5" SMG 9mm upper for my M16, along with all the contrivances (magazine adapter block and magazines) to make it run. I think it is the most fun configuration and would certainly use that upper on a semi-auto pistol build.

By the way, I bought a bunch of 9mm magazines from SGAmmo.com. The "C-Products" magazines are perfect. Those that are branded "Colt" are made by C-Products - same thing. I see that the 20 round mags are still available in quantity on the SGAmmo site.

I'd love to have a MP5 but just can't justify the cost of one.
The one thing that's nice about the one I built for my daughter is it has a reduced lower and is less bulky that the colt style, both the 9mms have dedicated lowers.

From a legal standpoint the braces are good to go for now and can be shouldered "occasionally" by the ATFs wording. Considering that the ATF only makes judgement calls as they interpret the law they could change their minds tomorrow.

I interpret “occasionally” as all times between reloads.....but that’s just me.

I like the way you interpret that. Honestly the chances of any shooter being challenged by the wording at a range are pretty slim.

"Occasionally. . ." Hmmmm.

I can hear the testimony now:
"Your Honor, we had the defendant under surveillance day and night for six months. During that time he fired his AR pistol equipped with a brace a total of 583 times, of which he put the brace to his shoulder a total of 96 times. We consider that to be more than occasional shoulder use."

Fortunately, here is one they don't take issue with:
