Looking for a set of original wood grips for my model 60, makes me wish Rays sport shop in north plainfield nj was still in business, they really did have everything. Anyone have any good Rays stories, the store or the indoor range?

I miss Ray's. I grew up in Plainfield and would go there often. There was a sport shop in Atlantic Highlands when I had a job there years ago. right on Main St. Lots of used firearms. Picked up most of my S&W's there back when I got my permit in the AM and brought the gun home that afternoon.
I moved out of NJ almost 40 years ago. Every gun store had character. Meltzer's in Garfield had prices. "2,4,6,10, Meltzer takes your money again!" Old man was a hoot. Jerry ran a range on rt23 in Cedar Grove. He took a lot of time to help me shoot the Model 19 I got from Meltzer effectively. There was a range downstairs from a bar in Garfield that had a pile of dirt on the floor to fire magnums and rifles. I thought my .357 was loud until a guy touched off a .303. I went upstairs for a double. First exposure to fll auto, emptying a mag of .380 through a Mac 11. "Back in the day" NJ was a relatively decent place to grow up. Sorry for the drift. Joe

Yes, fond memories of Ray's, they had the best selection of reloading supplies, got many good guns there and for a long time they had the only indoor range in the area.

I have no clue, been a long time. I lived in Passaic County until I moved to Florida so my shooting was limited to Passaic and Bergen counties. Joe

I went there often as a youngster. I remember ogling a Smith 296 .44 spl.
My dad took me into the range to watch. A gunsmith was test firing a detectives Walther PPK. He asked my dad if I wanted to shoot it. He put the gun in my hands. I touched off 2 slow rounds. Then I rapid fired 3. Then fired the last one. I got the paper twice. My first time shooting; I must have been 7 yrs old or so.
My guess was, the gunsmith figures that if the Walther didn’t ftf while a child shot it, it would work every time.
