S&W 422 6"

Steal of a deal on that 6” 422! I just put the finishing touches on my “old school” 422 4” target project. I sighted it in today. I’m getting quarter size 12 shot groups at 50 feet with Remington subsonic ammo and cycles perfectly. Could not be happier!

A great deal sir! I was only able to get a 4-in and a 6 before I left the US in '98. I have ran into several on GB but the going prices for near-NIB are way out of my price range. No .22 is more reliable in my opinion ... although they prolly don't have the longevity of a 2206 or 41.

Please explain?

Although the slide itself reciprocates (correct term?) on a steel tube, which itself is pinned to the steel barrel, the slide still has some contact with the aluminum frame at the back. The contact, there, isn't anything as bad as the slide and barrel contact with the aluminum frame of, say, a 6906 or 3913, but still some contact. Second part, my 622, has some slight peening of the aluminum frame where the slide stops when going back into battery. I'm reasonably sure that S&W designed them so that the slide would be stopped, solely, by the barrel extension tube (again, not sure of correct term). That said, mine hasn't been fired much and shows a little bit of peening there. I will try to dig it out and post a picture.

My comment wasn't intended to impugn the 422/622 in any way at all - I will continue to buy as many as I can afford ... which is so far zero additional for the past 20 years ... :(

Would someone with the S&W book please post the year that the 422 serial numbers TBT52XX and TBT78XX were shipped... Two of us here with TBTXXXX numbers. Thanks

I made a disassembly "dingus" for my 422. If memory serves a plastic one came with them NIB.

Great minds think alike... I made this about a year or so back out of frustration with not being able to find an original.

Like -ALL- three alpha SN prefixes, these were only ever in a "loose" order so without a call to S&W or a factory letter (or if you have your original box with end label), the SCSW-4th can only give a close guess.

That guess for the TBT-xxxx series is 1989.

This is how it was explained to me, but it not guaranteed to be accurate by me. But it does make a lot of sense.
On original boxes there is a four digit code. On the original box my 422 came in the code is 8139 for ser.# TBT78XX This is how it was explained to me: The 8 is for the year 1988 the 139 is the 139th day of the year. Thus Wed. 18 May 1988 is the date. I do not know if that is the shipping date or the receiver made date. Most likely it is the receiver made date. If you have your original box try it and see what you come up with. If it is important to you to know for sure you will need to request a letter from S & W at a cost of $75.00 I think. No problem if you think I am off my rocker.

You are not off your rocker, haha. It has been said that a phone call to S&W can get you a date. I am also unsure if it is a frame date or a ship date that they give you... I have never called and asked.

I called and asked for a date for my 2214 (UAH28xx). I was given a shipping date of Nov. 1994 for it. I asked for info on the 422 hoping someone had the book close by. Thanks rolandj for checking the code on your box and Sevens for the possible prefix interpretation. I may end up calling S&W CS anyhow.
