Herman Wouk wrote " War and Remembrance", the only book that listed the names of the Navy pilots lost at the Battle of Midway, three of which came from my home town. He also wrote "The Winds of War and " The Caine Mutiny".
Great author and enjoyed his books.
RIP Mr Wouk.

I enjoyed his work! He will be missed!

Read The Caine Mutiny as a young Coast Guard officer, and I remember having trouble putting it down. A terrific story, and being a seagoing officer, I especially enjoyed its portrayal of life aboard the Caine in wartime under the command of the neurotic, unstable Queeg. Saw the movie several years later, but in the meantime, had a chance to see it off Broadway while I was attending a school at Governors Island. Really enjoyed it.

Spent all summer reading The Winds of War as a teen, and watched the mini-series several years later. A magnum opus indeed.

Rest in peace, Mr. Wouk. You leave an indelible mark and a remarkable canon.

Amazing the number of deaths in the last week or so of famous folks.....
Again, while I "liked" this thread, it seems inappropriate to do so when someone has passed.

I liked the 1980s TV series The Winds of War and War and War and Remembrance with Robert Mitchum. Did not read the novels.

I have not seen the series streamed in Netflix or Amazon Prime, at least not that I recall. I hope they do someday. I note in DVD the former, “Winds,” box set is a available for $25, which seems reasonable, while the sequel series, “War,” goes for $250, which does not.

Maybe I should read the novels...

Just peeked at Youtube. Looks like a lot of it — all of both? — is available there. Hmm. Screen play for “Winds” is by Wouk.

Both were two volume sets of books. I read both several times (I was a military history co-major), and his were pivotal books.

I had no idea if he was living or dead. The local fish wrapper did 4 columns on him, but no mention of either title except the titles. I was dismayed. He was an excellent writer.

RIP

He passed on May 17th. 103 years old. 10 days shy of his 104th birthday.
He was a WW 2 Navy vet as just one of his lifetime achievements. He had a good and full life.

I've read his books. A very insightful writer who was extremely good with details that made it hard to believe he was writing fiction. I read The Caine Mutiny as a teenager and was really impressed.

R.I.P. Mr. Wouk. Ya done good.

John

I also was a student of his writings and saw the mini-series. A very good read for those that haven’t read his works. Think it’s time to break them out for summer reading. RIP Mr. Wouk. You leave an indelible mark.
