WHAT KIND OF DRIVER ARE YOU?

Mostly 7, with some 6. I tend to drive right at 5mph over the speed limit. I stay in the right lane unless I need to be in the left to pass or turn. I have close to 1,000,000 miles driven over my lifetime between work and personal. I preach situational awareness to all the youngsters I ride with or drive. I am constantly in my mirrors to make sure I know who is around me at all times. I do not need to look and see if the lane is clear if I have to do a quick avoid. I already know if it is.

State and Commonwealth traffic laws/ ord/ rules( whatever they are called) vary. Couple from several states; stop far enough behind vehicle in front to see vehicles tires on road. By chance you get rear ended by some idiot on phone, speeding, ECT and you crash into vehicle in front you can not be found “at fault” for the crash. Always take pics with cell phone AND license plates of every vehicle around crash.
When turning on a 4 lane highway ALWAYS turn into CLOSEST lane to you regardless. Emergency flashers are to be used ONLY when OFF THE ROAD, ie, on shoulder or if BROKEN DOWN. They are not for heavy rain, fog ECT. Doubt any of these look them up in state/ commonwealth traffic book. Sadly there are very few practical drivers tests for new and old drivers. Voting is a RIGHT driving is a PRIVILEGE that can be revolked.

One ticket since 1970. I'm generally the guy in the right hand lane, doing no more than five over the limit with some guy tailgaiting me trying to get me to move over and let him go by (Too much work I suppose to move over and pass me). He'll follow me halfway across the state, right on my bumper, with two lanes to the left wide open, but when/if I do move over, he goes by like a shot out of a gun. He wins!

Having a CDL and riding a motorcycle makes one a well rounded driver. Utilizing a CDL you realize you can possibly kill people if you are stupidly driving. Utilizing a motorcycle you quickly realize that anything can kill you. I used to run a train as well but that's a whole different story...

I have always been a very defensive driver (never gotten a ticket or been involved in a crash as the driver) and because of my former profession I adhere to the rules religiously, it was noted several times that I habitually used my turn signals even during pursuits. However, yesterday I had to run down I75 south of Dayton to AIM Surplus. I quickly lost my religious beliefs, what a mess. Everybody travelling 75+mph in large clusters of traffic, (like those floating islands of plastic in the ocean) no one making attempts to space themselves out from other traffic, vehicles changing lanes without looking, crossing several lanes to exit and vehicles entering the highway, doing so without ANY attempt to MERGE.
In self defense I finally got in the left inside lane travelling 80+ because that was the only lane that had an OUT, where I could take to the median if some idiot decided to, occupy the same space I was already in.
Maybe I'm just beginning to show my age.

All the above. Just depends on my level of intoxication and the intoxicant. :D

In all seriousness, I am probably 50/50 6 and 7. Been driving since I was 15 1/2 and I am now 57. I've had a Class A with tanker, doubles/triples, hazmat and motorcycle endorsements since 1984. I drive everything from motorcycles, emergency vehicles to big rigs and have never received a citation - not to say I haven't been stopped, just never been scratched. Collectively I have driven about 3 million miles between the aforementioned vehicle types and in several countries. Hoping my luck holds out another 30 years. :)

No, it's not your age. In years past when I traveled to Ohio it used to be a relief to be in traffic so much less manic than Vegas. After a bit of a break, I went this summer. Good grief, Genghis Khan and the hordes would have been afraid. What did they start putting in the water up there? The worst place and time was anywhere near Wright Patterson AFB at commuter time.

I too like to think of myself as a perfect driver. I'm just wondering why the rest of the vermin on the road doesn't think or drive as well as I do.;)

Well trained, extremely cautious and very, very, very lucky.

One of my trainers used to ask "What's the most dangerous mile on the highway?" After scoffing at answers like "The one closest to your house?" or "In town?" or "On the freeway?" he'd lower his voice, draw you closer and dope slap you and yell "THE NEXT ONE YOU IDIOT!" That lesson was not wasted and the evidence is sitting here typing this.

I will claim to be a good #7 after 60 yrs of 4 wheel driving and 50 years of 2 wheel, all without an accident if I don't count being bumped from behind while stopped. Best advice I ever got on defensive driving was from a wise long distance biker friend; "Pretend you"re invisible". It works.

I've been driving for about 52 years. Got my DL by handing a note from Dad to the DMV head in Hyannis that said "give my son a driver license" and off I went. Have never taken a test, written or driving. And never a moving violation. Now that I'm in California, where the most "I'm not aware of anything" drivers live -

Borrowed a friend's car, no horn but a religious bumper sticker. I spent a few days driving in LA, pounding the dead steering wheel horn while screaming out the window and giving people the finger. Last thing they saw was a "Jesus Loves You" bumper sticker as I steamed away.

At some point a couple of weenie pedestrian did the "you have to stop" routine as they stepped off the curb. Phil Niekro didn't brush back as well as I did - I think they're still spinning.

So, by Boston standards I would call myself a restrained driver. :)

I will start and proclaim that I am a STRATEGIC driver, which confuses and sometimes upsets the lady in my life, as she is a combo of TIMID/REACTIONARY, which, in turn, drives me nuts sometimes, although I'm more than happy to let her drive in the city (I pretty much just close my eyes and try to breathe deeply.).

What say you all?
Ditto for me=7 STRATEGIC (with a touch of 6 TACTICAL/AGRESSIVE) and my wife=2 TIMID/3 REACTIONARY

I'm always looking two or three cars ahead of me. My wife not only needs a full city block of clear road before she'll pull out, she reacts to the car directly ahead of her when it is a block away too.

She is the worlds MOST nervous passenger. She will literally do the sharp-intake-of-breath and stomp the passenger floorboard looking for a brake pedal when a car a half a block ahead puts on their brakes.

I'm the worlds most laid back passenger. I pay pretty much NO attention to traffic around us when she's driving. I figure she's got it handled and if she doesn't there really isn't much I can do about it anyway.

As a result, she drives 90% of the time. I only drive when the roads are bad or we're lulling a trailer.

I'm the kind of driver who doesn't wait till I'm in the 'turn only' lane before signaling. I'm the kind of driver who'll actually use Hazard Flashers, instead of a turn signal when warranted. Inclement weather conditions or at dusk and dawn cause me to use Headlights, instead of relying on DRL's that offer no side markers or tail lights. In those rare times I'm sitting with engine running, it's with Park Lights on, instead of Head Lights blasting out into the road, blinding others. Getting fuel causes me to pull through to the farthest pump, instead of the closest, so it's easier for the next person. Sitting in a line of traffic with signal flashing(especially turn only lane) has never caused the red light to change any sooner.:D

I am definitely a 7. Life is good. I want to squeeze every second out of it. I took two Defensive Driving Courses back in the 60's and 70's, and credit that with saving my life on numerous occasions.

I would say that I am Defensive and Decisive. I find that to be a good combination, watching out for hazards while having a plan to execute. Not aggressive, not timid, but driving in such a way that I get to my destination with the minimum of fuss and bother.
