Had a small plastic part break on the bottom right french door of my unit.

We had the tech come out and take a look at the unit and a $15 part had broken, causing the door not to line up properly or shut without more pressure.

He told us that the fix was ordering a whole new door front that cost $660........
instead of just getting new parts.

Have the days of fixing units ended ?
No more skilled tech's that know how to do minor repaires ?

Is there a better way? Help !!

Ed that is a load of Bravo Sierra!! In the apartments I had a dozen different models of fridges. I would fabricate those bottom support hinges, because most parts over 8 years old are available, but the special order takes up to six months!

Think this way. 1) There is a hinge support, kind of like an "L" (It might be in an odd direction. 2) Often the hinge post is part of that support. They didn't use to be. You can use a section of correct dowel rod to make the hinge post. 3) It needs to be in the correct position in three directions. X, Y, & Z. up/down, left/right & front/back. 4) The dowel will need a way to keep from falling through the L bracket (think roll pin or snap ring)

I would plan on a minimum of two trips to a good hardware store!

I didn't do very much residential work, but whatever part you need is available if do a quick search with your model number. You can get a pic of the parts breakdown (just like gun parts) and order what you need. I had the spring on my French door frige break (left door) and ordered a new one. They sent 2. Don't think it was more than $15.
I woulda thrown that guy outta my house! (And then said "Git offa my lawn!")

I didn't do very much residential work, but whatever part you need is available if do a quick search. Guys like that are either working for a crooked company, don't know what they're doing, or both. They make service techs look bad. I knew too many parts changers over the years, even in commercial work. Hacks!!!
Ivan is right. You can make the repair with a little know-how. I believe he managed a boatload of rental units. Imagine paying someone a months rent for a repair every time something broke. Money lost. That just ticks me off all to heck when companies do this Sierra!

The parts SHOULD be available. If they are not for some reason, the part can be easily fabricated from a piece of Nylon or Delrin material. Appliances (like pretty much everything else these days) are mostly made over seas and even the very few still assembled in the USA are using either Chinese or Mexican parts.

There are no longer extended warranty's that go beyond 7 years and that is simply because their life expectancy is just about 7-8 years now.

We moved into our brand new home in March and it came with all GE appliances. The GE Fridge Compressor failed the very first day we were here and the GE Dishwasher failed after using it twice. Both were replaced by the builder but that is a sad note to say the least! When offered an extended 5 year warranty by GE we declined. When these GE appliance are no longer practically repairable( when I can'r repair them for a reasonable price) we will buy Whirlpool appliances as needed. Even the GE reps said Whirlpool is the last Company building units here in the US and even though they probably still use Chinese parts, they are better built than most. We had Whirlpool appliance in our last home and they were trouble free for he 10 years we owned them and lived there. From what I've witness by personal experience GR and Samsung are at the bottom of the barrel. Maytag is no better and not what they used to be.

The problem.......
I found out that the plastic part that broke, is a all in one fabed to the door part.......
and that bottom plastic section is not replaceable.

Looks like $500 for a new door................
because the door stop did not perform corrrectly, causing the $15, plastic part to break.

I just don't think that Maytag will admit to a part problem and fix the problem, or at least send me a door and have me pat for the labor instalment?

Have you looked on-line at the schematics for your model of Maytag frig?

You might find the part on a schematic at the Maytag site; then, you have the option to buy from many vendors including Amazon.
