"Length Limiters" in Model 10-5 Chambers?

I recently acquired a Model 10-5 which was formerly the property of the "campus cops" at Eastern Michigan University. The serial number dates it to 1970. When I got it, I realized that the chambers had some sort of little "sleeve" dubisaries which prevented .38 Special cartridges from chambering all the way. They stuck out the rear about .3" or .4". I soaked each chamber with penetrating oil and carefully drove little buggars out with a mallet and a drift. Has anyone else encountered this with old police guns? What was the reason for it? :confused:

Sounds like the inserts for "Simunition" ammo, to prevent chambering live ammo. Simunition is a round that works like real ammo but the projectile is a wax or plastic, like a paintball. We used them in training scenarios in the academy and in-service training.

Okay. That makes sense. I had asked the owner of the LGS about them and he said that he had seen them in some other PD turn-ins over the years. Thanks!

I bought a 66-1 snub marked “BDPS” (Baylor Department of Public Safety ?)
that had something similar. I reckoned them at about 3/8” so pretty close in size. I don’t know if I could lay my hands on them, but iirc, they looked like small pinch-type hose clamps, but sort of reverse-sprung, to cling to the chamber walls.

Sound just like the ones in my 10-5. ;)
 
I am very familiar with Simunition. They have all sorts of ingenious ways to convert many different types of guns to use Simunition paintball ammunition only, including ARs and even M249 MGs. That is actually a necessity as Simunition ammunition is mostly used to shoot at other people and you can’t take a chance on allowing a live conventional round to be accidentally chambered. Using Simunition 5.56 in a M249 is a real blast. Like shooting a full auto BB gun. It uses a replacement bolt assembly that will not allow chambering of a conventional 5.56 round. And it operates in blowback mode only. I have one of those Simunition bolts hidden away somewhere, haven’t seen it in many years. Also quite a bit of Simunition 5.56 and 9mm ammunition with nothing to shoot it in.

I said paintball, but it does not actually use paint. It is a colored soft wax that comes in different colors so shooters can be identified. It is sort of like lipstick.
