Looked up the Sig 124gr 9mm ammo test

Sig has had good results for me in the past

but I wanted to look up how their new V-Crown ammo
with the Sierra bullet (?) , did in a few internet test.

The test were into plain gel & the 4 layer gel, to see how it performs.

I like and shoot a lot of Sierra bullets in my rifles and some pistol loads
but have not bought any in the last three years due to their higher cost.

My first site was from a guy in TN, that does a lot of ammo test.
He tested the 124 V-Crown in a Glock 4" that gave 1138fps.
The 4G test had the bullet expanding and penetrating 14 3/4"
The plain gel test, the bullet expanding quickly to .698" dia., with only 7" penetration.

On Lucky gunner : Glock 22 5" had the 124 V-Crown doing 1189fps.
It was ok in the 4G test but in the plain Gel, penetration was only 9".

I just wanted to post this information, for those that want to use it for SD use
and have them check out how it performs in their pistols, to make sure
that you will be happy on how it performs.

Maybe a fluke or maybe a better round is needed?

Did the Glock 22 have a 9mm barrel in place of the stock .40 S&W barrel?
 
I just read somewhere in the past few days that the faster those V Crowns go, the more they expand. Just an FYI

Thats why I have several 10mm pistols. medium 10mm loads or hot 40 loads.

I'll follow as I think they would be good in under 3.5" barrels. Anyone know where to just get the bullets?

The V Crown bullet is a Sig/Sierra collaboration and they are sold under the Sierra name. So just check vendors for Sierra bullets.

This is no secret, ANY bullet will expand faster and larger the faster it is driven! This is hardly unique to the V Crown series.

many hollow point designs don't expand if the cavity gets filled with something like clothing fibers or wood fibers. That is why some have polymer tips. So, some don't expand well if plugged.
 
Well, regardless of the FBI's testing protocols ("We're here from the federal guvment and we just want to HELP you...?"), the average male chest thickness is approximately 10"...

Perhaps an honest 8" penetration with expansion would probably be qite effective, in most cases...?:rolleyes:

Let's not forget that dreaded specter of possible overpenetration, either!:eek:

P.S. There was a very negative review (by Tools & Targets) of the 9mm Sierra JHP and the company subsequently provided the tester with some "NEW & IMPROVED" rounds that performed very well indeed. Just don't know who to believe, now-a-days!
 
Remember that the FBI/IWBA standards are based on LE use, in which there is a real possibility of shooting from angles that require more penetration. This is particularly true of shots more or less from the side, which may have to penetrate an arm and still make it to the vitals. In addition, the use of calibrated ballistic gelatin is a tool by which testing can be replicated and is consistent. It is NOT a 1:1 relationship with shooting offenders.

In reality, the most important single issue in ballistic effectiveness is placement. If one does not know where to shoot and put the rounds there, they will have a real problem. Of course, if one expects a conflict and cannot be elsewhere (cops don't have that options; private citizens generally do), the correct answer is a properly loaded long gun. Pistols are what one carries when there is no specific reason to expect to use it.

When young, the Speer Gold Dot got a bad test from one of the rags.
"New Improved" rounds were sent and this time the bullets passed the test.
The copper jacket, lead makeup, design and how it is put together for a pistol & rifle bullet,
can make or break it, if it is not correct for the job and use, at hand.

I believe Speer rifle hunting bullets come in six grades, to the fps and game to be hunted?
 
Prior to my retirement SIG did an ammo demo at my departments range shortly after they set up their ammo factory in Jacksonville AR. (They are just 1/2 mile from my department) The rounds performed as expected, no better or worse than any other quality JHP. We adopted the SIG ammo as our duty load.

In our officer involved shootings with the SIG V crown 9mm 124 grain it has performed well.
 
Look up the tests on the Winchester Ready 124gr +P JHP on Youtube. The results looked pretty good to me.
