My Dad was the oldest of 3 Brothers, middle Brother went to Delahanty Academy in 1945, upon discharge from US.Navy and put in 30 years, most of it in the 110 Pct. N.Y.P.D.

When I came Home in Oct. 68, He kept trying to recruit me, but I did not have the temperament at the time….I was driving in mid-town and stopped for a light…A Subject approached my Car and started wiping my Windshield with a dirty rag…I told him get away from my Car..He stepped back and pulled a Knife on me, at which time I grabbed a large, long Bolt with threaded nuts, wrapped with rubber tape….Telephone pole anchor bolt…Exited my vehicle and chased Him half a block ,before I realized my Car was still at the light…I had the best job of my Life @ New York Telephone as a Cable Splicer.

Those People, NYT, treated me better than family…The waiting list to transfer to Florida was 5 years long….After a year and a half, I returned to Florida and went back to pulling wrenches…About a month later, a guy walks up to me in the Shop and asked if I wanted to go to the Police Academy….He used to write me tickets when I was in High School….I graduated in 1971, and retired in the late 90’s…..They retired my Badge number,139…

My Oldest, was offered a Campus Police job while in School….that turned into a job with the City and eventually He applied Federal and went to Quantico…This week, He accepted the Deferred Resignation Offer and made me very, very happy 😃

Job well done, retirement well deserved.
Thankyou Sir…His retirement brought back some close calls I had, One of which I’ll share with the forum.

I had been called in on a day off and it was about 0530-545 when a disturbance call was dispatched, possibly Armed Subject…I arrived at a garden apartment complex and the zone cars had set up a rough perimeter. I. found the Sgt. talking to a small, Hispanic Woman who was very distraught,
saying over and over “ Please don’t kill my Son “ She turned to me and said the same thing, adding “ The Marines, they make him crazy”

I asked Her what his name was and She told me, I asked Her if there were and weapons in the Apt. and She said a Rifle.

The complex consisted of a 4 story apt. Buildings with concrete sidewalks and heavy shrubbery all around…good for concealment, but, it’s NOT cover.

The Apt.on the ground floor He was in had a large picture window facing the entrance…. I could hear him exchanging conversation with the Officers present….

I called out his name…On the second attempt, He replied “What” I said I wanted to just talk to him and see what was going on, that His Mom was very worried about Him, and I promised Her I would talk to Him but He couldn’t be having any weapons in his hands.

In the meantime, I heard the zone Sgt. put in a call for Swat…now it’s close to 0600 and it getting light.

He replied He would talk to me. I told Him to lay the weapon down and step back from it and to open the door.

As I crossed the concrete courtyard to his front door, and zigzagging as best I could, a little voice in my head screaming “ No, No No”…

He opened the door and stepped back raising his hands…I snapped my Pistol back in the SS3 Holster, He buried his Face in my Shoulder and started crying..I got on the Air and advised to cancel Swat.

As I looked around, I saw a dept. store .22 Rifle on the floor…Cheap gun , but deadly in the right hands.

I asked Him what was going on and He replied” They spit on Me”..I said Who? He replied When He came home and got off the Plane, people at the airport spit on him ,so He attacked them..Apparently , the results were devastating enough to get him committed to the mental ward at the VA hospital. I advised Dispatch I was switching Channels and asked records to contact the VA and ascertain if he was a patient there. They advised He was and they would accept Him back as long as there were no criminal charges involved.

It was full daylight out and I saw the Shift Commander talking to the zone Sgt.I told him we had to go, and he whirled around and put his hands behind his back….I cuffed Him and searched Him.We went outside and His Mom started hugging both of us and was crying with Joy..I explained to Lt. I had contacted the VA and they would accept him as long as no criminal charges were involved. He was not happy, but agreed with me the County jail was not the place for Him. We got a Day shift Unit to follow me to the station to drop off my Unit, No Cage, and transported him to the VA hospital where two uniform Officers met us, As I uncuffed him, they reached out for Him and I said “No, He’s still in my custody and I promised him he could have a cigarette when we got here “. After he finished it , I let the VA take over..09 No report.

Well done. Your story reminds me of the Third Watch episode where a couple of idiots tried to rob Bosco when he was on his way to work and he turned the tables on them. Great episode!
