Powder help for 357

I haven't seen anyone mention Alliant Power Pro 300 MP. I haven't loaded it in .357 yet but will definitely be trying it out in the future. Like 2400, 300 MP does not require a magnum primer.

I've worked with it nearly 10 years ago. Good stuff.
But it's another alliant powder, and they have a lot of atonement to do before I give them the nod.

I would also recommend Accurate 4100 / Ramshot Endorcer . They are the same , just in 2 different labels . It's right there with 2400 , just a bit slower burn rate and it meters well . I have used it quite a bit and really like it . It's also readily available . Regards Paul

There's a lot of powders out there now that will work, but for years 2400 was my go to for upper end loads. It's now 296 or H110 others have mentioned. I forgot to add that I've been playing around with Vihtavuori N110 in 357 and 44 magnums lately. So far I like it.

There's probably a reason for that...

Alliant used to be with the most available powders, at least around these parts. They seem to be cutting back on some of their formerly popular powders. Especially 2400. Years ago it seem like they were pushing BE-86 for everything. I think they'd be happy to supply one powder.

Of course...

much of this should be taken with a grain of salt
in my observations of it so far, It does not seem to like running in the upper fringe pressures. It makes up for this by making its numbers early in the pressure curve.
It's taken some work to get it chained down in a cast lead 350 legend load. In the end, it delivered the goods.

...results may (will) vary. But if I were going for velocity, I'd surly try a pound.:)

13131V V N110 gets very close to H110 in terms of velocity with noticeably less flash/concussion, while using Fed 100 primers. It works very well in revolvers and levers tried in with 125/158 jhps.

Am using max AA-7 loads with Fed 200 primers for 125 jhp accuracy loads in revolvers, but falls somewhat short with 158 grainers velocity wise. Still very accurate though.

I always been a V V fan. I just looked up N110 and on the V V site the load for 158xtp is 13.5 -16.3, a 3gr spread for 1400-1600 fps WITH small rifle magnum primers. 7in bbl

Now with AA-9 same bullet is 12.4-13.8, a one grain spread, for 1200-1360 fps with small mag pistol primers. 6in bbl.

An extra inch of bbl should only give you about 50fps gain.

Big diff here. What gives?! Hodgdon conservative pressure for j &k frame 357 ? and V V is for L frame and other beefy frame revolvers?

If you really want wrist snapping barn burning loads H110/296 are the ones. 2400 I understand has been discontinued. As to Accurate #9 I’ve not used it but hear from others it’s excellent.

If I’m loading hot 357’s for my rifle I use H110 and 158 gr soft point or hollow point semi jacketed. For handguns in the moderate range I really like Ramshot Enforce. HS6 or CFE Pistol are other good candidates for moderate magnums. CFE has a flash suppressant that I really like.

2400 has not been discontinued .

not quite sure what you're asking, but they are 2 different powders. And imo V V tests their pressures differently

In what way? From what I have read V V is conservative on pressures. What I am asking is why would you not want to use V V over Hodgdon? Same price better performance, less flash and wider spread between mim-max.

I’ve chronographed 300MP, Lil Gun, 2400, HS6, BE86, and VV 3N37 in .357 mag out of a 4.2” GP100.

All load data used came from Sierra no. 6

BE86 gave the highest velocity by far with 125gr XTPs, and good accuracy at several ladder points. 1475fps 10 shot avg, and that’s with a ridiculous .009” BC gap. To be fair, I haven’t tried 125 grains with Lil Gun or 300mp yet.

With 140gr XTPs, BE86 was very close to HS6 & 2400 for velocity:
HS6 1376 fps
BE86 1406 fps
2400 1355 fps
3N37 1288 fps

Im very (pleasantly) surprised at how fast & accurate the mid burn powders (especially BE86) are with 125 & 140gr bullets in .357 mag. And the difference in report/ blast between the mid powders and the slow powders is staggering.

I can’t find a reason for myself to load the slow powders when using light bullets in .357 now, I never would have guessed the mid powders to excel in that scenario. Of course in long barrels I expect the slower powders to reverse the roles.

I just started loading .357 and am using Tite Group and some Unique with good results. These loads are all with 158 GR. and are for plinking. Friend has a Martini Cadet in 357 and these loads area going through his rifle mostly.

I use a lot of H110 and I used to use even more 2400, but another powder I've had good luck with is Power Pistol with 125 gr. bullets. It will get you 95% of what you can reach with H110. I usually get at least 1400 fps in 4" guns and 10.0 grains is a lot less "blasty" than H110 or 296. It's almost like shooting the milder 158 gr. loads. And Power Pistol seems to be on the shelves these days.

I keep asking about VV N110 as it seems to have all the benefiits of H110 but less flash n blast. I guess noone here has tried it and compared?

Hi I am new here. I have been reloading for 40yrs and for the last 15 precision long range rifle. I have not loaded pistol since I was in high school! Looking at full power for a 6in 686-4 to plink steel at 100-150 yds shooting 125gr JSP. I am selling house and will be full timing in a rv for some years to goof off and need to pack up my supplies now and shoot/reload later this summer when I am dialed in.
I have all the components and tools for 357 other than powder. I am short on time to figure this out myself so wondering if anyone could recommend a suitable and available powder that I can buy and store now while I still have my home address for shipping. Thanks!!
