I stumbled across a used 645 in fair to good (not excellent) condition with no mag - I have 4566TSW, 4513TSW, 4516, 4516-1, 4516-2 - and I have an 8 rd steel base mag that is most likely a 645 mag - but do I want a 645

The 645 was S&W first entry into the .45acp semi-auto market. It’s historical.

When they are running right, (with the ammo they “like”, and they like most,) they can be flawless and combat accurate at least. Fine tuning handloads tightens groups. In my opinion which is biased, they are classically nostalgic. Put some 745 grip panels on for a dramatic upgrade.

That steel base plate magazine could also be a 745 magazine.

Why would you want a S&W 645? Because Sonny had one.

This picture reminds me that the wood 745 stocks are at least a little interesting don’t ya think?

I wonder why S&W would have had these stocks and never put an emblem in them but even more interesting is that the right side stock is dished for an ambi thumb safety lever that no Model 745 ever had, full stop.

Sure, the 645 had one, but these stocks were never shipped on a 645.

I find it interesting anyway 🤣

I owned one of the last-run of 645s before the 4506 was available to the general public. Frankly, I was disappointed in the machining. When viewed end-on, it actually looked off center with the machined "lip" along the slide noticeably wider on one side than the other. It didn't really affect how the pistol shot, but I considered it to be a little sloppy. I also thought that the Phillips-head screw holding on the decocking lever wasn't particularly elegant. I traded it in for a 4506, which I still own to this day.

I don't know how valuable or historic any 645 would be, but I do think I made the better choice for me by getting a 4506.

I happen to have a set of these wooden stocks and mine are also cut for an ambidextrous safety. As to why no emblem or escutcheon, the wooden stocks are no thicker than the plastic stocks, so it may have been out of caution, not wanting to weaken the thin wood.

I would think with that lineup, a 4506-1 would be your jam.

Reach out, if you need another steel base mag.
The 4566TSW would be my choice if only one (shorter slide/barrel = more compact plus WVSP pedigree) - my interest in the 645 was whether there is any significance / unique meaning or value to a 645 (fixed sight) at a "reasonable" cost due to the missing mag.

I guess it boils down to its the first of the kind (kind of like a 39 or maybe a 439) but not with the pedigree of a 745.

I think its going to stay where it is though I might offer the guy my metal base mag as everything else I have has later mags with plastic base.
