Will S&W give you a shipping date over the phone?

Yes it is true! Although a letter will also give the location it shipped to, and typically will give you the exact configuration it left the factory with - finish, barrel length, etc. if there is any question as to your model's originality.

I’ve called a few times on different Smiths and in short order was supplied the year of manufacture.

I always use the contact form in the S&W Web site to ask questions.
A letter will supply more detailed info. S&W doesn't issue letters, but you can get one from the S&W Historical Foundation here: https://swhistoricalfoundation.com/letters/
Is it the true manufacturing date, or is like the letters, the shipping date?
I have only been told the year it was manufactured. Those I’ve asked about weren’t anything special so I never lettered them.
So who told you this? Or this the conclusion that you came to all on your own?
It's blatant ignorance, so it might behoove you to track down that source and, well, ignore it.
