YouTube has truly gone down the tubes as far as trustworthiness, ethics and the truth are concerned!

With the advent of neural processors and Quantum computing, both of which are realities right now, when it comes to AI, you ain’t seen nuthin yet. Within 10-20 years the world as we now know it will be unrecognizable. And that is no exaggeration. I cannot imagine the consequences for humanity.

Sadly AI makes it even easier for troublemakers to create what appears as reality but is totally fake, seemingly just for the amusement of those creating the video. I recall a few years back a semi-comedic video claiming that the large 9 volt battery was nothing more than 16 (if I recall) AA batteries enclosed in a covering. Even without AI the faking was pretty damn good. Someone that I know thought that the video was real and cut open one of those big batteries and was perplexed that it wasn't a bunch of perfectly good AA batteries. I imagine AI could make videos like this that would be impossible to see the fakery.

I've got to qualify a point made above. Editors are generally selected for their ability to choose and edit content so it'll appeal to the readers. If they happen to be technically competent, that's a bonus but immaterial to their actual job. They often rely on the reputation of the author, which might not cover all areas. I've got some old Gun Digest published books* on gunsmithing that are now heavily annotated. (Examples: Colt SAA cylinders ARE located by the base pin bushings. S&W revolver cylinders AREN'T located by the gas ring.) Also, the demon Liability has caused the loss of a lot of formerly great technically detailed articles. The American Rifleman is a good example. I've got issues from the 50's by legendary technical guys on how to chamber and install rifle barrels and other subjects. You're not gonna see that now. Which can be a shame, in more ways than one. I can recall a few guys showing up after they had read an article about some dynamite modification and after they-or some "gunsmith"-had done it, rendering the gun damaged/dangerous.

*Don't know about any current works. We now have better sources of information. But sometimes, ya gotta wonder.

I was taking the dash out of my wife's Camry and got stuck at one point. I found a YouTube video that showed me how to do it that featured a very attractive young lady in short shorts and a halter. I had to watch the video three or four times to make sure I got the info right!

For the record she knew what she was doing and the info was correct.
"Ellie May Clampett Shows You How to Repair Your Combine Harvester" :)

I had a similar experience with a stuck clutch on a Stihl weed trimmer. Lotsa videos with bad audio & lighting, shaky cameras etc. until I came across "Chickanic" on YT. She wasn't provocatively attired so there was less distraction but she clearly knows her stuff AND how to present it. She and her hubby run a small repair shop in central Arkansas.

But yes, the problem with YT and just about every other online channel is that you really have to sift through an increasing lot of garbage to find stuff you can trust.

Lately YouTube has way too many commercials. The only good thing is that I can get up to go to the bathroom during the commercials.
They do censor a lot of gun related materials while showing how to build them.

I've heard a number of positive comments about Mr. Harrell but am not really familiar with his work. I realize there is some good You Tube material.
He methodically tested ammo from different guns and was good at it, but what set him apart was rather than using gel, he used a 'meat target' constructed of leather 'skin', pork ribs, oranges for lung material, another pair of pork ribs in the back, a layer of T-shirt and his high tech layers of fleece to stop the bullet and check the degree of over-penetration. He had real world experience and was very approachable and unassuming in his presentation. He was very careful with his conclusions and opinions, but of course suffered intense criticism from envious types that are prominent on Youtube and other social platforms.

We have all gone on YouTube to research how to do a certain procedure, how to repair a plumbing issue, a car or household appliance. If you are good at discerning which video's are worth their salt then YouTube can be a great tool - no argument!

But now YouTube has been flooded with propaganda video's, political video's filled with falsehoods and misleading information, scams, feel good video's about animals, people etc. that are narrated by AI and are total totally BS! IMHO this is nothing more than an attempt to train or condition people into believing what they want them to. I'd say half of YouTube is filled with this junk now!

No matter what the hobby, information platform, educational platform, broadcasting business, etc that starts out with all good intentions, leave it to the ones with an agenda to stink it up! I truly hope everyone here fully realizes what YouTube has become as of late and is savvy enough to avoid all the scams, games and information gathering schemes. Not saying to negate YouTube all together, just navigate through it with caution and skepticism!
I have noticed that. A couple of weeks ago UTube started blocking me because I have an Ad Blocker. I reset my Ad Blocker to meet U Tube requirements and they still block me. I used to watch U Tube for how to information, Just a Few Acres Farm and product reviews. Now most of the time I cannot watch it at all.

They do the same if you have a VPN. If you set up an account, they'll let you in.

A guy at work has spent a bunch of money trying to become a hot rod engine builder.
He even has his own engine dynamometer and has done a bunch of you tube videos.
But his language skills never made it past the 9th grade and it shows in his videos.
He can't understand why all the comments focus on that rather than his engine work.

I figure AI will generate so much content that is of poor quality it will drown out the good stuff and YouTube will die. What do we need YouTube for if we have AI too?
Yea, a LOT of generated crap. All those stories about “Latest news” or “breaking news”. According to that poor ‘ol Putin’s been destroyed a few hundred times in the last year🙄

To seperate the chaff from the wheat you need to know enough about the subject. We can get away with doing/learning a lot of things by rote, but only if the procedure comes from someone knowledgeable. More garbage in youtub land will make it harder to find decent info. because its more garbage to sift through. I can't recall how I found Paul Harrell or Lucky Gunner, but I wouldn't want to try now. Paul had a background and experience in teaching. He also was clear about what was a fact, what was an analysis, a conclusion, and an opinion.

I'll say I watch less and less video now, even though I did sign up so I could watch the Superbowl this year. Also recently Forgotten Weapons youtub posted two presentations from the Arms Collectors meeting by the leading professionals doing archaeology of battles that otherwise have very little solid documentation.(y)
