Tragedy near Kerrville

I never read all of this thread, but heard there was a forecast for bad weather a day in advance.

Looked it up and saw this.

"The afternoon before the disaster struck, the National Weather Service office in Austin/San Antonio issued a flood watch on July 3 at 1:18 p.m. CT that included Kerrville. The alert stated: "Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches with isolated amounts of 5 to 7 inches are possible."

Whats done is done, and it's truly a tragedy, but could it have possibly been avoided?
The Kicker is the "are possible". We get a lot of those warnings about what is possible and it never happens.

Technical point, cell phones and the NOAA system both use the RF spectrum, the only differences are the frequency and modulation scheme.
Yeah, totally different like apples and oranges. Poor wording on my part. NOAA signals, etc are VHF vs UHF / SUHF for cellular. Both have plusses and minuses, however, during weather events and other emergencies, VHF has proven to be the very, very, clear winner for emergency broadcasts. Additionally, VHF associated rcvrs are much more reliable than cell phones. VHF typically have longer reach, thus the need for numerous cell towers dotting the earth. Nice to have redundancy but for areas like the Guadalupe, I'll take VHF over cell always. Similar to being out to sea.

We have weather alerts all the time, sometimes it is like the little boy crying wolf. We had a storm/flood alert for where I live on the 5th. We got less than 1/4 inch of rain. What you have ahead of time is a watch alert, often when the evacuate now alert comes, depending on where you are, it is too late.
You can't roll the dice with young lives that are not yours to gamble with.

I saw a news conference that had a fella state the same thing about appearing to cry wolf when ask why an order to move wasn't issued. You elect these officials to protect/inform citizens in cases of emergency ... not to decide if you should be made aware of the emergency.

Yes, from the usual conspiracy nutjob sources who cannot deal with ANYTHING that is actually beyond human control.
Sorry, don’t listen to “ nut job sources” for news. Forget if it was Fox news, Newsmax or regular FM radio.
Sure not attempting to start anything but was just asking if any one else heard such. Gov. DeSantis has banned cloud seeding in Florida. Regardless of what one thinks there is much going on “ behind the scene” in this country.

Some good news. Our neighbor sent some help.

Mexico has sent water rescue teams and firefighters to help in Texas after the holiday weekend floods that have killed at least 100 people, with many more still missing.

Members of Mexico's Civil Protection Water Rescue Team and Cure Firefighters were among those helping search efforts in Kerrville, Kerr County, a Mexican governmental agency

Many cities in Texas (including mine) have sent rescue personnel. Others have come from OK, LA, and probably other states as well - and, yes, also from Mexico.

On another note Mexico often sends a firefighting team called Los Diablos to help fight widlfires in Big Bend NP and Guadalupe Mountains NP. I watched their arrival at Guadalupe some years back. They appeared to be a very professional team of about 10-12 men.

...I live considerably north of that area but know the topography. The area around those rivers is steep and rocky with soil that has all the absorbency of concrete. This unprecendented amount of rain in such a short time created the absolute worst scenario at the worst time in the worst place.
Blame is unproductive but prayers, volunteaers and donations will help mitigate the suffering.

Though it seems society has chosen to put so many daily tasks, grinds, and responsibilities on others, it's the parents duty to research and research again where you're sending your children to camp, recreation locations, etc. Research is so much more than "it's a church camp" or "nothing's ever happened there. Common sense should tell you what areas of interest you should concentrate on. Health, welfare, and safety are great areas to start with. Make up a list of questions for each and go from there. Sadly, many will just make excuses why they "just didn't get around to doing it". I see it daily with everyday living and it drives me mad.

That's just not the case here. I can think of nothing more despicable than blaming the parents for their children's death.

This particular camp passed emergency preparedness inspections by the state of Texas just months before this event. The state claim not to have any details of the camp emergency plans on file however. Questions about these "plans" were referred to the camp itself.

I looked it up; Mystic has been in continuous operation as a summer children's camp since 1923 with the exception of WWII when it served as an R&R site for the US Army. These were the first fatalities. I knew it had been there since I was a kid, but I didn't realize it was over a century old.

I'd say that qualifies as a solid track record, but no man can control the weather.

State regulations for summer camps are extensive and cover everything from fire extinguishers to food safety to water quality to waste disposal to the number of toilets and showers that must be provided. Water safety regulations include requiring a certified lifeguard for every 35 children during swimming activity and PFDs for each child during boating activities. Camp employees have to undergo background checks to ensure that they are not sex offenders and must be monitored for "typical child predator behavior" whatever that means. All allegations of abuse must be documented and reported to the state. There are no mentions, though (that I could find) of anything related to weather emergencies.

I suspect the death count will increase.
From news footage it is shown that maybe hundreds
of campers, trucks etc... scattered for miles.

Law enforcement will begin running registration of license plates for
trailers and vehicles.
Trying to match up with the owner's name and match up camper to truck etc..

Big question where are all these owners ??
